What about you, are you a concealer or revealer? Let me explain a little better what it means in today’s post (that’s the answer of many concerns of mine!)
Maybe you are fascinated -as I do- by all those images of minimalist interior, that you see here and there at present. All those rooms with very few things, in order, with only a light bulb hunged from the ceiling: you love them and would like your home to look like them! The real problem is that, when you try to fit this style into your home, you fail. I do not count how many times I’ve looked at my house and I’ve thought, now I throw away three -fourths of things...and start being a minimalist one! I’ve decluttered my home office here, you know: I really threw away many useless things and put things in order. But the result is the one you see on top image on the right: my home desk corner is still full of objects, colors, photographs, wall arts. How is it possible? What’s wrong with me?
Nothing, and I have to thank Apartment Diet (a lovely design and blogging duo I met during The Hive, a few time ago, attending their workshop) for this answer. I’m just a sample of a “revealer”one!
I’m one of those people who need to have their own things on display, who are scared by empty surfaces in real life, even if probably they love them on a picture.
These images I matched are some samples to show the different approach in the same home rooms…

E voi, di che tipologia siete? Concealer o Revealer?
concealer or revealer
which one are you?
If you you don’t know on which side you are, just choose among these short sentences:
- “I mostly like my things hidden in storage except for a few key pieces”
- “I mostly like my things on display”
&
- “My mess is mostly hidden, there are rooms and cupboard you can’t open in my house”
- “My mess is everywhere”
It’s easy, 1= concealer , 2= revealer
+
Semplicemente, 1= concealer , 2= revealer
These terminology have been coined for the first time by Nate Berkus and I think it helps a lot to understand the right approach that a person should have with their own home. Because, as I often say, interior design is a little bit like fashion: as it makes no sense to follow trends if they do not fit to your person, the same is for home decorating. You have to know yourself, and what’s makes you feel confortable first, then you can think to take inspirations from this or that style. No sense to enforce the minimalism if you are a revealer one! That’s why I say that architects should have a degree in psychology as well 🙂
So you what kind are you? I resigned myself to this, I’ll never live in a perfect empty place like those ones on the left. But the samples on the right side give me some hope there’s something good in being a revealer as well, isn’t much more fun, maybe?

Magari è pure più divertente, no?
