ITALIAN INTERIORS | The beautiful simplicity of an Italian style interior

When you think of an Italian style interior, which kind of house comes to your mind?

Maybe, an unifamiliar house with a big kitchen and a long table. A bright space with clean lines and few furniture pieces, matched together in an historical space? That’s exactly what I found in this beautiful Italian villa interior located in Varese, North Italy, and designed by studio Archiplan.

The recovery of this early-20th-century villa consists of the complete reconstruction of the roof and the kitchen interior, while everything else were left in its exhisting look with the restoration of the materials and very few changes, with “the idea of giving form to the abstract concept of time“

The kitchen space is amazing: a bright space with a long table (6,5 meters!) and a kitchen island decorated with squared white tiles, which echoes the large window gridwork. Great idea for the suspension lighting: an hanged wooden beam with some bared bulb lights in white porcelain. Love also the idea of those cinema seats on the corner!

Quando pensate ad un interno in stile Italiano, che genere di abitazione vi viene in mente?

Forse, una casa unifamiliare, con una mega cucina ed un ampio tavolo. Uno spazio luminoso, con arredi dalle linee semplici e minimali, magari in un involucro storico? Sono esattamente le caratteristiche di questa villa in provincia di Varese, progettata da studio Archiplan, con cui inizio questa prima settimana lavorativa dell’anno.

Il recupero di questa villa di inizio Novecento consiste nel rifacimento totale di cucina e tetto, mentre per tutto il resto gli interventi architettonici sono stati limitati al minimo…anzi, i materiali sono stati trattati in modo da essere “mantenuti nella condizione reale in cui si trovano, con l’idea di dare forma ad un concetto astratto come il tempo”.

Lo spazio cucina è spettacolare: un tavolo da 6,50 metri di lunghezza e un’isola decorata con piastrelle quadrate bianche, che richiamano la forma degli infissi. Come lampadario, una lunga trave in legno appesa e delle lampadine in porcellana bianca. Ci sono anche delle sedute da cinema in un angolo, probabilmente recuperate da qualche mercatino, o magari già parte della casa stessa?

The minimalist recovery intervention is really clear in the master bedroom, where the existing wallpaper has been carefully restored by brushing the wall surfaces, creating a rough effect similar to an ancient affresco paint. Contemporary elements have been added here and there with a minimalist approach, such as the pendant caged bulbs in the bedroom (find more about caged lamps trend here). Ok, maybe I would add something more in this bedroom, I confess.

I’m fascinated by that beautiful terrazzo flooring, and even more by those embossed tiles decorating the original risers of the stair. Other elements, such as windows, doors, fireplace, were also updated and painted in bright white: an easy way to give a fresh look to an interior without changing its history, with a total white that emphazises even more the beautiful existing materials (love white? find many more inspirations in white here).

L’approccio davvero minimale dell’intervento di restauro è molto evidente nella camera matrimoniale: qui è stata portata in vita la carta da parati esistente, trattata in modo tale da potersi conservare al meglio in futuro e da ricreare con le irregolarità della parete un bellissimo effetto simile ad un affresco antico. Qui sono stati aggiunti davvero pochi elementi di arredo dalle linee contemporanee, e le fonti di illuminazione sono delle semplici lampade a bulbo appese. Ok io forse qui avrei aggiunto qualcosina in più, ma è un parere molto personale.

Sarebbe stato un vero peccato non conservare quel pavimento a terrazzo dell’angolo studio, e ancora di più quelle bellissime piastrelle con motivi a rilievo poste a decorazione delle alzate della scala. Tanti altri elementi, come porte, finestre, caminetto, sono stati restaurati e ridipinti in bianco: una scelta sempre efficace per rendere un interno più moderno, ma in questo caso anche per sottolineare i materiali esistenti lasciati invariati.

For the bathroom, same approach. Few linear custom elements have been added, like this modern and simple wooden washbasin. Those flooring in hexagonal tiles is the original one, and its so trendy and imitated at present! (about geometric interior trend find more here)

Infine, anche per i bagni lo stesso tipo di approccio progettuale: interventi ridotti al minimo, conservazione dei materiali esistenti, poche e semplici aggiunte. Come ad esempio un nuovo mobile con lavandino dalle linee lineari, in bianco e legno. Poi, non conservare quel pavimento a cementine sarebbe stato un vero reato: al giorno d’oggi vengono imitate e riproposte un po’ da tutti, ma queste sono le originali!
