Have you ever visited Madrid, the capital of Spain?
We spent 3 days in Madrid during our drive tour of Spain last summer. That are not enough to properly see the city (which is quite big), but in my opinion are good enough to have an overview of this beautiful city.
We really enjoyed out time in Madrid and probably will come back again. In Madrid, we found a nice weather – not as hot as in the other cities we visited, especially Andalucia ones – and really lots of things to do and see.
Madrid is the right city both if you love history and contemporary architecture. If you love food, well, than it’s the perfect place for you. I’m giving you some recommendations for a 3 days stay in Madrid in this post.

Hai mai visitato Madrid, la capitale della Spagna?
Noi abbiamo trascorso 3 giorni a Madrid durante il nostro tour in auto della Spagna la scorsa estate. Certo, tre giorni non sono sufficienti per vedere tutto di Madrid, ma a mio parere sono sufficienti per farsi un’idea piuttosto chiara di questa bellissima città.
Ci siamo davvero divertiti a Madrid e probabilmente ci torneremo di nuovo. A Madrid abbiamo trovato un bel clima – non così caldo come nelle altre città che abbiamo visitato, specialmente quelle dell’Andalusia – e molte cose da fare e vedere.
Madrid è la città giusta sia se ami la storia e sia se sei appassionato di architettura contemporanea. Se ami anche il buon cibo, allora è proprio il posto perfetto per te. Ti dò qualche suggerimento in questo post.

- Caixa Forum, designed by studio Herzog&DeMeuron
- Reina Sofia museum, with a a new contemporary building designed by Jean Nouvel (and the amazing Guernica by Picasso, too)
- The colourful buildings of Madrid Barajas Airport and Silken Puerta America
- The botanical gardens in the Atocha Station

- The big royal architectures, Palacio Real and Plaza Major
- The Basílica de San Francisco El Grande
- if you love history, you will be happy to know that in Madrid there is even a building from the Egyptian age, the Temple of Debod.

If you love urban landscapes, in Madrid you should do:
- A walk in Barrio de La Huertas: better known as Barrio de Las Letras, that is, the district of the letters, because literary figures such as Cervantes and Lope de Vega lived and worked in this neighborhood;
- A walk in the multicultural Barrio de Lavapies: the ancient Jewish ghetto of Madrid is now inhabited mainly by alternative young people and immigrants, and it is rich of colors and street art;
- A walk in the Barrio de la Latina: one of the most typical barrios of Madrid, it has medieval origins and irregular and narrow paths;
- A walk in the Barrio Salamanca: if you love shopping and fashion, this is the district for you;
- A walk in the Barrio Malasana: popularly known as Barrio de las Meravillas, it is very lively by young people at evening and night, continuing the tradition of Madrid’s Movida started in the seventies and eighties;
- A break in the Retiro, where you can stop in the beautiful Parco de Retiro.

Se ami i paesaggi urbani, a Madrid dovresti fare:
- Una passeggiata nel Barrio de La Huertas: meglio conosciuto come Barrio de Las Letras, cioè il distretto delle lettere, perché personaggi letterari come Cervantes e Lope de Vega vivevano e lavoravano proprio in questo quartiere;
- Una passeggiata nel multiculturale Barrio de Lavapies: l’antico ghetto ebraico di Madrid è ora abitato principalmente da giovani alternativi e immigrati , ed è ricco di colori e di street art;
- Una passeggiata nel Barrio de la Latina: uno dei barrios più tipici di Madrid, ha origini medievali e vicoli irregolari e stretti;
- Una passeggiata nel Barrio Salamanca: se ami lo shopping e la moda, questo è il quartiere che fa per te;
- Una passeggiata nel Barrio Malasana: conosciuto anche come Barrio de las Meravillas, è molto frequentato dai giovani di sera e di notte, proseguendo la tradizione della Movida madrilena iniziata negli anni settanta e ottanta;
- Una pausa al Retiro, dove è possibile sostare nello splendido Parco del Retiro.

- shopping in the Mercado de San Miguel, in the beautiful historical district of La Latina
- eating a bocadillo de calamares (almost everywhere, that’s the typical food of Madrid!)
- having tapas and a tinto de verano in the hip district of Malasana
- a dinner in the oldest restaurant of the world, Restaurante Sobrino de Botín
- the best croquetas of Madrid in Casa Julio
- churros with chocolate in historical Chocolatería San Ginés.

Where to Stay in Madrid,
if you love history, design and food
One of the newest design hotels in Madrid is the Gran Melia Palacio de los Duques.
Located in the Habsburg district close to The Royal Palace, The Opera House and The Cathedral, Gran Melia Palacio de los Duques is a luxury design hotel in Madrid completely inspired on Velazquez’s master pieces.

L’hotel si trova nel quartiere di Habsburg, vicino al Palazzo Reale, al Teatro dell’Opera e alla Cattedrale, ed è un lussuoso hotel di design completamente ispirato ai capolavori di Velazquez.
