ITALIAN INTERIORS | A charming holiday villa in Tuscany

Today for Mondays Made in Italy let’s virtually have a tour in a charming holiday villa near Arezzo, in Val di Chiana, where I spent last weekend during my visit to the Fiera Antiquaria (soon a post about this on the blog). Villa Galletto is part of Fontelunga properties, including an “informal” luxury hotel and two private villas –Villa Gallo and Villa Galletto– located in the heart of the Tuscan countryside and perfectly integrated to the surrounding nature.

English architect Philip Robinson indeed has designed these two villas by reusing the construction materials of a rural building that existed in the area, and by creating two new volumes which are mirrored around a common courtyard (see plan below).

The two holidays villas have a different size, Villa Galletto is designed for couples and it is a small villa with a double bedroom, while Villa Gallo is larger and has two bedrooms with their private bathrooms.

Oggi per Mondays Made in Italy vi porto virtualmente con me in una bellissima casa vacanze nei dintorni di Arezzo, precisamente in Val di Chiana, in cui ho alloggiato lo scorso weekend in occasione della mia visita alla Fiera Antiquaria di Arezzo. Villa Galletto fa parte delle proprietà Fontelunga, che comprendono un hotel di lusso “informale” e due ville private –Villa Gallo e Villa Galletto– collocate proprio nel cuore della vallata toscana e integrate perfettamente alla natura circostante.

L’architetto inglese Philip Robinson infatti ha creato i due nuovi volumi delle ville riutilizzando i materiali costruttivi di un edificio rurale dismesso presente nel lotto e dandogli una nuova vita proprio grazie a queste due case private, che si specchiano intorno a una corte comune con giardino e piscina e che sono di dimensioni diverse: Villa Galletto è pensata per coppie ed è una piccola villa con camera matrimoniale, mentre Villa Gallo è più grande ed ha due camere con bagni privati.

I immediately had a crush with the interior style of Villa Galletto.

It’s a match of rustic and contemporary style, and it’s not easy to find this kind of interiors here in Tuscany because in most cases villas are classical and rustic, with classical style furniture that has not so many things in common with the design I love. Here instead the interior combines traditional materials, such as recovered bricks and exposed wooden beams, with a minimal design and with light colour hues, and a bright and modern interior.

The ceiling is heigher than a standard one and the living is articulated into two different spaces on different heights, with a sitting area higher than the dining one, on a glazed corner that opens to the swimming pool. Furnishings have been tailor-made for the villa interiors, for example both the couch and the bed are made with a brick base to fit perfectly into the space, while the kitchen develops on two opposite walls with milky whites cabinets.

Quando sono entrata a Villa Galletto, mi sono da subito innamorata dello stile degli interni, che combinano uno stile rustico con il design contemporaneo. Non è semplice infatti trovare qui in Toscana delle case in stile moderno, spesso infatti gli interni sono in stile classico e lasciano poco spazio al design, prediligendo ad esempio mobili in stile e colori scuri. Qui invece gli interni uniscono materiali tradizionali, come i mattoni di recupero a vista e le travi in legno, con arredi minimali e tinte chiare, che rendono questi interni particolarmente luminosi.

Il soffitto interno ha un’altezza che permette di creare uno spazio rialzato per il soggiorno, che sfrutta proprio il pendio esistente, ed è ricavato da un angolo vetrato che si apre verso la piscina comune. Gli arredi sono stati disegnati ad hoc per la villa, ad esempio sia il divano che il letto sono stati realizzati con una base in muratura e si integrano perfettamente allo spazio circostante, mentre la cucina è composta da una serie di mobili contenitori su due lati contrapposti in colore bianco latte.

Here, as in the living area, the ceiling is higher than a standard one, and the interior space is really bright and airy. Floor-to-ceiling windows, with their balconies, have a rustic design as well, in a white wood. Both bedroom and bathroom are rustic and minimal, with cabinets designed into tailor-made niches.

I love the bath-tub|shower design, set in a niche carved into the floor and covered with white mosaic and partly with natural stone. Finally, a special note to the double sinks in the bathroom: this is really something comfortable when you are travelling as couples!

La camera e il bagno si trovano sul lato sinistro rispetto all’entrata, e anch’essi hanno un’altezza maggiore di quella standard e hanno alte finestrature, che rendono lo spazio interno luminosissimo. Gli infissi e i balconi, in legno dipinto di bianco, ma anche le tende, rimandano anch’essi ad uno stile rustico, e si aprono da terra a cielo. Per entrambe le stanze lo stile è rustico e minimale, con armadiature a scomparsa ricavate nello spessore della parete.

Bellissimo il dettaglio della vasca|doccia, ricavata in una nicchia scavata nel pavimento e rivestita in parte con mosaico bianco e in parte con pietre naturali. Come non notare infine i doppi lavandini del bagno: quanto comodi sono quando si viaggia in coppia?

Finally, the outdoor space, that’s the real wonder of the whole complex.

Here, the corner walls built with recovered bricks define a central courtyard with the swimming pool, and the overlooking sunbathing and dining open spaces of the private villas. The pictures speak for themselves, and it make me feel so nostalgic now!

Infine, lo spazio esterno, vera meraviglia di tutto il complesso.

Qui le pareti ricreate con mattoni facciavista di recupero delimitano una corte centrale con piscina, sulla quale si affacciano gli spazi scoperti privati per mangiare fuori o prendere il sole. Le immagini parlano da sè, e a me ora sta venendo una grande nostalgia!!
