Be inspired by the Sur Contemporaneo Trend : a new take on Brazilian Modernism
The project I selected today is an inspiring example of how architecture and nature can connect deeply, and how local craftsmanship can inspire us. Blending sustainability, minimalism, and artistry, Canopy House is a residential project located in Brazil and designed by Studio MK27.
This project is a harmonious ode to Brazil’s rich natural and cultural landscapes, blending sustainability, minimalism, and artistry in a home that feels deeply rooted in its environment.
_______
Respecting Nature: A Delicate Balance
The design and construction of Canopy House were guided by a profound respect for the surrounding forest. With its steep slopes and dense vegetation, the site presented significant challenges, requiring a meticulous approach to ensure minimal impact on the environment. The house was designed to sit lightly on the land, with a white prism elevated on stilts, leaving the terrain virtually untouched.
This approach is emblematic of Sur Contemporáneo—a design trend that prioritizes coexistence with nature, balancing bold architectural statements with a commitment to sustainability and harmony with the land. The stilts not only preserve the forest floor but also create a sense of weightlessness, allowing the home to feel as though it floats amidst the treetops.
_______
Immersion in the Elements
Accessing Canopy House is itself an experience. A spiral staircase winds through the trees, connecting the terrace with the bedrooms. This intentional design choice eliminates indoor transitions between spaces, offering residents and guests an unfiltered connection with the weather, wind, and vibrant sounds of the jungle.
At the top of the prism, an elevated platform creates a serene living area enclosed by sliding glass panels. The transition between indoor and outdoor spaces is subtle, fostering a seamless immersion in the lush surroundings.
_______
Celebrating Brazilian Culture Through Design
At its core, Canopy House is a celebration of Brazilian heritage and craftsmanship. Every element of the interior design speaks to the vibrant cultural tapestry of the country, with a focus on national contemporary design and traditional artisan techniques.
Cobogós, for example, are custom-designed partitions in perforated blocks cast ever-changing shadows across the interior, creating a dynamic interplay of light and texture throughout the day. This feature is a hallmark of Brazilian modernism. Sliding mashrabiya panels, a coffee table by Pedro Petry, and a sculptural piece by José Bezerra highlight the versatility of wood as both a functional and artistic medium.

The Sur Contemporáneo Style: A Growing Trend
Nestled amidst the lush greenery of a tropical forest, Canopy House is a striking example of the Sur Contemporáneo aesthetic—a trend story celebrating the intersection of modern architecture, local craftsmanship, and the vibrant cultural essence of the Global South, covered in our last Trend Atlas.
Sur Contemporáneo—literally translating to “Southern Contemporary”—is a design movement that emphasizes the cultural and ecological richness of the Global South. Rooted in sustainability, this trend incorporates natural materials, bold architectural forms, and a deep respect for local traditions. Canopy House exemplifies these principles, balancing minimalist modernism with the sensory richness of Brazilian culture.
