Considered a perfect neutral, tan evokes warmth and stability. Suitable to just about any design style – tan is the colour of stability and calm. A pale tone of brown, with a small hint of red inside which confers an additional warmth to it.
The first official use of the word “tan” in English language was recorded back in 1590 from “tannum”, the oak bar used for leather tanning.

Like other browns, tan it’s an earthy color and for this reason it evokes feelings of security, calm, consistency, trustworthiness, and sanctuary. In feng-shui, brown is strictly related with roots and nature, so it’s considered a stable color to be used as a comforting color at home.
For its connections with nature, tan is often associated with concepts of “organic” yet used often also in graphic design and communication. A natural and neutral color which sets a relaxed and comforting tone, perfect for warm minimalist spaces but also as a background for almost any kind of color.
Compared to beige ( which is often confused with ), tan is a warmer and at the same time darker color. In fact, beige is a lighter shade of brown with a hint of yellow inside, while tan is a shade of brown that contains some red, giving a golden or reddish look to it.
