If you are following IB on instagram, you will already know that last week I have been a couple of days in Valencia for a press trip. In the beautiful Spanish city, I had the chance to meet the guys of MUT design studio, who will be the designers for the next Das Haus at imm cologne 2020.

What is the Das Haus
Das Haus is a design event that puts on stage an inspirational and conceptual house, every year designed by a different studio. You will maybe remember the design of 2019 Das Haus by studio Truly Truly around the concept “Living by Moods” : well forget it, because every year the Das Haus is totally different from the previous one. That’s what makes it so interesting and inspiring!
Das Haus is the project of dreams for any designer: in fact, designers are totally free to design whenever they want as they are only given a general topic, all the rest is all upon their imagination. On the other hand, the aim of Das Haus is to inspire the visitors innovative visions, not by giving ready-to-use answers.

Das Haus 2020: concept
The topic of this 2020 edition is indoor / outdoor : Mediterranean lifestyle and culture is synonymous with life outdoors, that’s why MUT design studio decided to take the inspiration for the next Das Haus from the architecture of their land, Spain, by presenting a visionary concept of an house without boundaries between indoor and outdoor.
The idea of opening up the indoor to the outdoor will be translated into a living concept, called “A la fresca”, where the inside of the house is turned to face the outside. The core of this unconventional space will be the Refugium, a modern interpretation of the traditional Mediterranean patio, which will be illuminated by a light source that aims to imitate the natural light and will be a space for meditation and quiet retreat. This central area will be then surrounded on the four sides by four veranda-like spaces, each one with a different function, open and designed for communal use.
The architecture will have the signature round shapes of MUT design studio aesthetics. The space will be styled with minimalist furnishing all suitable for outdoor use, in many cases by new products presented for their first time at IMM Cologne 2020. White will be matched with earthy shades and lots of terracotta, to give a minimalist but at same time rustic feeling.

In Valencia with MUT design studio
Alberto and Eduardo, together with their team, talked to us about their concept in a perfect sunny day in Parque Albufera, half an hour from Valencia. They gave us a taste of Valencia lifestyle with an outdoor lunch between paellas and wine, took us to their studio and around the city center, which I visited two years ago and I appreciated even more this time.
