And what’s better than the Mediterranean region to give some inspiration in this mood?
Actually, trend forecasters agree in affirming that it is also time for a change – to switch from the predominance of Scandinavian design, towards warmer and southern atmospheres – exactly the ones inspired by the Mediterranean area.
In design, modern Mediterranean style can be translated into spaces that blend indoor and outdoor, lots of natural light, natural materials and fabrics, big use of terracotta, ceramics and tiles. We define it “modern” to distinguish it from the traditional mediterranean style, that however is always a source of inspiration for this style.

Modern Mediterranean Style
How to decorate with a modern Mediterranean style
.
1/ Colors
.
Traditionally, Mediterranean interiors are known for white and blue shades and also ornamental patterns. The Modern Mediterranean style is bringing to life the traditional look and feel of Southern Italian, Spain, Greek Mediterranean homes but with a new modern twist: a minimalistic approach that explores warmer neutral colours and organic shapes.
The main color is white, from pure white to off-whites in with warm undertones – like for example ivory white, seashell white and champagne. For accents and decor, the colors are inspired by natural colors of the mediterranean landscape: that’s to say, the blues of the Mediterranean Sea, the greens and brown of olive trees and dried countrysides, pop of bright colors inspired by Mediterranean flowers.

2/ Materials
.
To get the perfect Modern Mediterranean style, you should combine materials typical from this region with a minimalistic approach and modern shapes. Perfect materials for this style include whitened wood, stones, wrought iron and raw wood for rustic accents, terracotta, and lots of natural, light and raw fabrics such as linens.
A key role in this style is given to ceramics – both for coverings and for decorating elements and objects. Tiles are often used on the flooring instead of wood because of the fresher feel when walking barefoot, that is very pleasant in warm and sunny days. Perfect for this style are decorated tiles like cement tiles, but also glazed and hand-decorated tiles such as majolica and zellige to create some corners and accents.
ITALIANBARK’S TIP // Do you prefer a more neutral and less decorated look? Wooden-effect tiles with whitened effects or stone-effect tiles can be the solution for you!

3/ Decorating elements
.
Do you know which is the most important element in a Mediterranean style interior? It is natural light.
Brightness, in fact, is the main feature of this style, for both indoors and outdoors interiors. For doing this, first, always allow natural light access into indoor spaces; second, favors white and off-whites, to create a feeling of visual relaxation and refresh the space.
For the decor, the inspiration comes straight from the traditional Mediterranean style houses: plaster and lime, rattan decor, linen and cotton fabrics in neutral colors, that all together recreate that typical atmosphere of the Mediterranean regions. Dried flowers are important in Mediterranean decor: they can be placed on vases or also on other creative ways, for example hanged on the ceiling, to decorate it.
A bit of vintage touch can also be nice in this decor: for example, by choosing in warm white or neutrals decorated with pillows and borders in macrame, sangallo or lace decor, or by adding small lanterns and baskets to be used as decorative elements.
ITALIANBARK’S TIP // Don’t forget to add some succulents and Mediterranean plants indoor!
Composed of three different 8.2×25 cm collections (Nuances, Petra and Muretto), with a natural, polished or satin-finish surface, Brickworks is a new range of porcelain stoneware decorations designed to bring a creative touch of style to a variety of applications for floors and walls.

4/ Outdoor
Outdoor spaces have primary importance in Mediterranean homes due to the region warm weather. Features from outdoor design impact indoor spaces both in terms of colours and materials, and on the other side the interiors are source of inspirations for the outdoor.
In fact, the blending of indoor and outdoor is one the most typical features of this style. This can be achieved by using a similar design of furniture indoor and outdoor, by using decorating elements such as linen curtains also outdoor, by creating cosy conversational corners outdoor…
