This bathroom is part of an holiday villa in Sardinia for a family of three, that we are renovating both for the clients to spend their holidays and to be rented as a bed&breakfast.  The ground floor is occupied by a double height salone and another living room, a traditional style kitchens and some rooms, while in the attic floor there are two other bedrooms, a studio and another bathroom.

The client wants a contemporary style, but we didn’t want to miss the special Mediterranean look of the space. You can find out more about the rest of the house in this post.

Spa-like bathroom design / Tip 1: Colors & Materials

The first key feature of a spa-like bathroom design is to choose light and bright materials. In fact, soft and muted colors are always perfect to establish a relaxing environment. When creating your colour palette, make sure to now work with high contrasts but always with a tone-on-tone palette. In case you may want to incorporate some colors, think about soft nature inspired colors, such as sky blue or sage green.

In this bathroom design, we choose a combination of warm whites and beiges, both for the wall paint and for the coverings. Zellige tiles are perfect to achieve that spa-like feeling typical of Moroccan retreats, as well as being very practical in bathrooms.

Extra tip: pay attention to the tile grouts! In fact, light or tone-on-tone are much better than dark ones to achieve a calming and relaxing visual effect

Spa-like bathroom design / Tip 2: Declutter

Another important step in creating a spa-like bathroom is to create a welcoming and calm space by embracing a minimalist design – and, also, by removing clutter. An untidy bathroom filled with things is absolutely the opposite of a spa-like bathroom, that should give a relaxed and calm feeling.

So it is essential first to get rid of any products that have expired or that you not used in the last year, then group them in similar products to store them inside a cabinet or in trays. When designing a new bathroom inspired by a spa, always keep in mind the space needed for storage but also the surfaces where to lay any trays or boxes for cosmetics and beauty products to be used daily, so to keep ready to use and in view. In our project, for example, we added a custom shelve under the washbasin, over the entire lenght, to be used for towels, boxes and storage.

Spa-like bathroom design / Tip 3: Furniture & Lighting

To reinforce the spa look is essential to choose the furniture materials to be aesthetically pleasing, blending with the neutral color scheme. Add a tactile and natural feel by choosing raw materials, for example in this case we choose a rustic wood for the vanity.

The plumbing fixtures should also be chosen carefully, to be aesthetically pleasant and minimal – brass fixtures will add a luxury feeling to the bathroom design, while if you love a more clean and minimalist look, black ones are always a good option. Don’t forget then a rainfall showerhead!

Another important feature to always keep in mind when creating your bathroom design is for sure lighting. To achieve that relaxing spa-like feeling, add in your design more lighting points – from ceiling, from walls, but also some soft table lamps. Moreover, lighting can also become a key decorating element of the interior – to be chosen consistently with all the rest. Perfect in these case are lamps oil bamboo, rattan, vimini, with a nice boho-twist.

Spa-like bathroom design Decor, Plants & Scents

Last step to create your spa-like corner, is to decorate with the right accessories – and, in addition to this, with green plants. If you have enough space, you can also create soft areas by covering bathroom floors with rugs. N

Select stylish and minimalist accessories that match the overall design of the bathroom. Together with these, decorate with vases and green plants, but don’t forget to choose the right plants for an humid space like a bathroom is. For example, some good plants could be the Aloe Vera, the Begonia, the Fern, the Bamboo, but also orchids and peace lilies.

Very last tip: don’t forget scentsThe right scents have the power to instantly transport you to a peaceful mental space. Calming scents like lavender and rosemary can be added to essential oil diffusers, but also with scented candles or soaps, as a simple way to incorporate some relaxing scents.

Now all you have to do is to enjoy your new small private spa!
