A roundup of the interior color trends for 2019, as seen at the Stockholm Furniture fair 2018, starting from the new pastel color trend.
Maybe you will think it’s too early to talk about interior color trends for 2019 in February, right?
But, since I recently visited two of the main European design fairs which are also the first design fairs of the year, I think there is already enough material to make some consideration on this. Indeed, what’s spotted at the main fairs usually is what you will see around in the next year. That’s why visiting these events is really a good source for news and inspiration if you are in the interiors and design industry.
Let’s see then in April at Milan Design Week 2018 if these interior trends will be confirmed!

Leggendo il titolo avete pensato che è ancora presto per parlare di tendenze per il 2019 vero?
In realtà visitare le fiere di settore serve proprio per questo. Di solito infatti, quello che si vede tra gli stand a mesi di distanza è quello che si vedrà tra le vetrine ed i siti, solo molto in seguito, tra gli interni reali. Come vi ho già detto ho da poco visitato due tra le prime fiere di settore dell’anno, IMM Colonia e la Stockholm Furniture fair -il più importante evento del Nord Europa. Quindi c’è abbastanza materiale epr fare già una riflessione, anche se ora non vedo l’ora di scoprire ad Aprile le novità che ci riserverà la Milano Design Week 2018!

Pastel color trend | the New Neutrals
The most interesting fact I spotted is a new use of colors and a new range of interesting shades.
The new big trend, indeed, are pastels used as new neutrals.
I already mentioned this among the trends spotted at IMM Cologne 2018 and it was for sure confirmed at the Stockholm Furniture Fair and Stockholm Design Week. After the big trend around rich jewel tones and strong hues we saw last year (still going on, indeed), now it’s time for pales.
Milky ice-cream colors to be layered and use on walls and accessories, to replace white in a more confident way of decorating. To be complemented by warm and soft hues, such as terracotta and chocolate, and nude ones such as beige and mushroom.
This return to pastel colors goes together with a new retro flavour with a Seventies twist that is clear in the soft shades and big structures of the latest furniture collection. Metals, like gold and brass, are still confirmed as key materials for accents, together with patterns and textures like the marble and terrazzo ones. But everything comes together in a new whole mood that is softer, brighter and toned down.

La novità più interessante che ho notato quest’anno è un utilizzo di tonalità chiare e pastello come colori neutri.
Ve ne avevo già accennato nel trend report dalla fiera di IMM Colonia qui e ho trovato questa tendenza confermata anche alla Stockholm Furniture Fair e alla Stockholm Design Week. Questo ritorno alle tonalità pastello è una chiara reazione alle tonalità forti e scure che abbiamo visto tantissimo lo scorso anno (che continuano tuttora).
Le tonalità pastello più attuali si ispirano ai colori freschi del gelato, da abbinare e accostare a layer su pareti ed accessori. Assieme a questi colori, a Stoccolma ho visto inoltre moltissime tonalità calde, come il terracotta e il cioccolato, e l’ormai onnipresente beige e nude.
Questo ritorno alle tonalità pastello assieme ai colori della terra si accompagna ad un gusto retro ispirato agli anni Settanta, evidente in molte nuove collezioni di arredo, che propongono forme tondeggianti e strutture importanti. Le finiture metalliche, come l’oro e l’ottone, sono ancora molto presenti ma con minore opulenza rispetto all’anno scorso. Allo stesso modo, continua la forte tendenza verso marmo e terrazzo, apprezzati per le loro texture decorative. Il tutto però oggi si combina in un mood che risulta più chiaro e leggero, desaturato e fresco, rispetto al passato.

The pastel colors for 2018/2019
Here some pastel new hues I think will be very cool for the upcoming months:
- Lilac : lavander and lilac are a much softer (and nicer!) version of the Ultra Violet trend announced by Pantone as Color of the Year 2018 (and that did not convince most of the interior designers, indeed)
- Primrose Pink and Tea Rose : Millennial Pink is still everywhere and that was also at IMM Cologne and Stockholm Furniture Fair, but also in lighter and brighter hues and not just in the powder pink we are already used to see (a lot)
- Peach Orange : the Seventies comeback comes together with a new use of earthy colors including orange tones. Peach Orange is a beautiful shade between Pink and Orange, quite neutral but not so much neutral: for this reason I’m bettng is will be the new Millennial Pink we will see very much around in the next months;
- Celadon, Celery and Avocado : I already posted about this colors in this article about the new greens. Love to see how the dark green trend has turned into these much lighter and soft hues of greens
- Lemon Yellow : yellow is another of the key colors for this year, but here again in its lighter and fresh version of muted lime and lemon yellow

Ecco alcune delle tonalità pastello che penso vedremo molto nei prossimi mesi:
- Lilla : lavanda e lilla sono una versione molto più soft del trend lanciato da Pantone con il colore del 2018 Ultra Violet (che non ci ha convinti molto, diciamolo )
- Primrose Pink e Tea Rose : il Millennial Pink è ancora ovunque, così è stato anche ad IMM Cologne ed alla Stockholm Furniture Fair. La tendenza però guarda ora anche verso altre tonalità di rosa, più coraggiose rispetto al classico rosa desaturato
- Arancio pesca : il ritorno degli anni Settanta porta con sè un nuovo utilizzo delle tonalità terrose, tra le quali gli arancioni. Il color pesca è un bel compromesso tra il rosa e l’arancio, un colore neutro ma non troppo, e io quasi scommetto sarà il nuovo Millennial Pink che vedremo tantissimo in giro nei prossimi mesi;
- Celadon, sedano e avocado : vi parlavo di queste tonalità già in questo post riguardo ai nuovi verdi
- Giallo Limone : il giallo è un’altra delle tonalità chiave per il prossimo anno, e anche qui, nella sua versione più fresca e leggera
