After visiting the IMM fair in Cologne on January and the Stockholm Furniture Fair this February, I worked to put together a new downloadable Trend Guide. Interior Design Trends: Should we Follow or Ignore them?

A good design should, above all, be long lasting and honest. This means go beyond current trends, that change in very few time. So now the question is: why we keep talking about trends in this blog?

I think that the reason really changes according to your profession. But, basically, learning design trends is useful for your job, if you work in the interior and design industry.

If you work for a company, or if you run your own company, knowing the current and future design trends can help in the research for new product launches. Also, in making a prediction in terms of sales for certain colors/materials/shapes.

If you work as a creative, following a design trend can look quite boring and predicted for your own freelance projects: you don’t want to do something original that next year you will see everywhere, right? So learning design trends is also a good way to avoid them. You can also learn about trends, then you can play with them in your own way. Or maybe deciding to go in the opposite direction. But, one thing that’s for sure: great designers don’t ignore design trends. They understand them, in order to do better with their own work.

Interior Design Trends: Seguirli o Evitarli?

Un buon progetto di design dovrebbe, innanzitutto, essere pensato per durare nel tempo. Ciò significa andare oltre le tendenze attuali, che cambiano in pochissimo tempo. Quindi ora la domanda è: perché continuiamo a parlare di tendenze in questo blog?

Ci sono varie ragioni e cambiano in base alla nostra professione. In ogni caso, conoscere le tendenze del design oggi è necessario per il tuo lavoro, ovviamente se lavori nel settore del design e degli interni.

Infatti, se lavori per un’azienda o gestisci la tua azienda/marchio, conoscere le tendenze del design attuali e future è fondamentale nella fase di ricerca per il lancio di nuovi prodotti. Per ispirazione, ma soprattutto per una prima previsione in termini di vendite per determinati colori/materiali/forme.

Però se sei un creativo, diciamolo, seguire le tendenze per i tuoi progetti può sembrare anche scontato e noioso. Immagino tu non voglia creare qualcosa di originale sul momento e poi vederlo ovunque l’anno successivo, o forse si. In ogni caso, conoscere le tendenze del design è anche un buon modo per evitarle. Puoi decidere di reinterpretarle, o magari di andare nella direzione opposta. Ma una cosa è certa: i grandi designer non ignorano le tendenze del design. Le conoscono, per fare poi di meglio con il proprio lavoro.
