TREND FORECASTING | TREND THEME 03, Indulge in Nostalgia

Indulge in Nostalgia is one of the 9 trend themes developed for 2023/24 in 2021 as part of the trend forecasting services. Be inspired in this post.

Trend forecasting is the process of researching and analyzing consumers habit, to provide designers’ and brands a vision of the future. In fact, by knowing what will be relevant in the years to come, what trends will last and what are just passing, they can make wiser choices and create products that sell more – because they will meet customers’ tastes and needs.

Part of my work, other then identifying and researching about macro trends together with other researches and experts, is then translating these into tangible interiors and design directions – in the form of CMF ( color, material, finishes ) analysis.

In this post, I’m sharing one of the nine trend themes developed for 2023 back in 2021 in collaboration with SOMA_studiomilano, as part of a 2-years trend forecasting service for brands ( more at this link ).

TREND THEME #03

Indulge in Nostalgia

Indulge in nostalgia is the trend theme we developed inspired by past times and memories, to create a safe place in a troubled world. Solid memories and symbols function as guides and inspiration in challenging times, bringing in new creativity and hopeful feelings.

Indulge in nostalgia is about making room for emotions and celebrating optimism and diversity by expressing ourselves through meaningful objects which recalls past times. A nostalgic mix from the past with lots of vintage design – from the late 60s and 70s – years marked with self-expression and rebellion. The 60s marked a rebellion against the 50s model of femininity and the emergency of hippie subculture, the 70s embrace LGBTQ+ and feminist movements. The 60s embrace youthful, energetic, and colorful aesthetics; the 70s were eclectic, loud, and optimistic. It’s all about mixing different ages – with pops from the 80s and from the Y2K, the favorite decade according to Gen-Z.

INDULGE IN NOSTALGIA / colors

Indulge in Nostalgia color inspiration comes from the eclectic and energetic 60s and 70s. Warm greens, burnt oranges, beiges, pastels, lilac, soft pinks and greens bring back this rebellious period vibe.

Patterns will also revive the 60s and 70s aesthetic as we see a coming back of bold retro motifs, bold geometric designs, puzzle-like patterns, monochromatic patterns and plenty of crisscrossed grid lines.

INDULGE IN NOSTALGIA / finishes and materials

Interior Expression finishes and materials celebrate the eclectic and energetic 60s and 70s. Wood and metal combinations, natural finishes, gradient effects, wavy and curvy surfaces, handmade tiles, geometric, fluid and wave embossed motifs are some of the elements that convey the 60s and 70s vibe.

INDULGE IN NOSTALGIA / forms and shapes

Indulge In Nostalgia forms and shapes are inspired predominantly by the 60s and 70s geometric
and elliptical forms, poa dots and puzzle-like compositions, plenty of checked grids shapes. We also see an influence from the Memphis design movement recalling the 80s and a touch of 90s urban expression.

// This trend theme is part of the “THE NOSTALGIC RECHARGE” macro trend, celebrating heritage, memory, authenticity
and self-expression. They must be seen as a kind of ongoing collage that we can “edit and restyled” to create new narratives and express our emotions through different design styles. Explore nostalgia by engaging consumers with your brand heritage and also by evoking their childhood and teen memories – this is especially relevant for Millennial demographics. Last, watch out for the 2000s aesthetics comeback.

// This trend theme is also part of a trend research developed in 2021 in collaboration with SOMA_studiomilano. Discover all the trend services at this link.
