Large format tiles are a big trend in interiors for ceramics in 2019

At Cersaie fair, I observed how large format tiles are still a big trend in interiors.

In fact, the ceramic trends for 2019 go towards super small formats on one side and extra large ones on the other.

While we will talk about the small sizes and the new mosaics in the next trend report from Cersaie, today I’m showing you some news in the extra-large format tiles. But first, let’s try to understand the reason why big tiles are so popular now. In fact, even if the trend started already a few years ago, Cersaie fair demonstated that the trend is not at all downhill and will be huge in 2019 as well. Now, the challenge is to reach thinner thicknesses for the much larger sizes.

Al Cersaie 2018 ho osservato due tendenze opposte in fatto di ceramica e di formati:

da un lato formati sempre più grandi (e più sottili), dall’altro formati sempre più piccoli.

Se del piccolo formato e dei mosaici vi parlerò nel prossimo trend report, oggi vi presento una serie di novità sul tema ceramiche in formato extra-large. Ma prima, cerchiamo di capire il perché di questa crescente popolarità del mega formato. Sono già alcuni anni, infatti, che le aziende propongono lastre di dimensioni sempre più grandi. La fiera Cersaie di quest’anno ha inoltre dimostrato che la tendenza non è affatto in discesa: anzi, la sfida è proprio quella di raggiungere spessori sempre più sottili a fronte di dimensioni sempre più grandi.

Why choosing extra-large format tiles

Big format tiles on floors and walls reduce to the minimum joints and discontinuities in the surfaces. The result is a clean and smooth surface, which is perfect for interiors with a contemporary and minimalist style. Moreover, these surfaces are easier to clean, due to the absence of joints.

Thanks to the latest technologies in the ceramic and stoneware, formats can reach now more than 3 meters . In this way, you can cover one full eight with just one slab, minimizing joints. Obviously, such large format tiles are very heavy and difficult to lay: for this reason, today the challenge is to create thin formats, in order to make them lighter and easier to lay. But the problem is that is the tile is to thin, it will break easily and after sevral testing looks liek the ideal format is now 6mm thick.

By choosing large format tiles you can also solve many design dilemmas: first of all, in renovations, they can be laid over existing coatings. In addition to this, as seen at Cersaie 2018 in many booths, with the large sizes you can cover custom furniture (think for example to the bathroom), but also some parts of the kitchen, such as worktops for example.

I vantaggi delle lastre ceramiche in formato extra large

Le grandi lastre per pavimenti e rivestimenti riducono al minimo le fughe e le discontinuità delle superfici. Il risultato è una superficie omogenea e liscia, perfetta per interni dallo stile contemporaneo e minimalista. Oltretutto, si tratta di superfici semplici da pulire proprio per la quasi totale assenza di giunti.

Grazie alle ultime tecnologie nel campo della ceramica, si possono ottenere oggi lastre di formati oltre i 3 metri. E’ quindi possibile rivestire una stanza a tutt’altezza con una sola piastrella, riducendo al minimo la presenza di giunti. Ovviamente, lastre così grandi sono molto pesanti e difficili da posare: per questo motivo la sfida è quella di creare lastre sottili, in modo da renderle più leggere e semplici da posare. Il problema è però che, se troppo sottili, le lastre rischiano di rompersi: dopo innumerevoli test, ad oggi lo spessore ideale è di minimo 6mm.

Le lastre in grande formato permettono inoltre di risolvere tanti problemi progettuali: primo tra tutti, nelle ristrutturazioni, posate sopra a rivestimenti esistenti. Non solo: come visto a Cersaie 2018, con i grandi formati si possono rivestire elementi di arredo su misura (pensate ad esempio all’ambiente bagno), ma soprattutto elementi della cucina, come ad esempio i piani da lavoro.
