Hello guys! Hope you spent a wonderful winter break. I’m back from quite a long break and happy to start a new year of inspirations and news now. I’m starting today with a first post about one of the key interior trends for 2018, the Wabi Sabi decor.
What is Wabi Sabi decor
We’ve already talked about the Wabi Sabi decorating trend last year, in the post about Christmas Decorating Trends here and in the post about Japandi interior style. Even if this style has been around for a few years now, experts say 2018 will be the year of Wabi Sabi. This decorating style born in Japan is now very common in Scandinavia, so we are expecting a lot about this.
To sum up, the Wabi Sabi is a Japanese life philosophy focusing on finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting the natural cycle of growth and decay. Actually, the opposite of our Western philosophy of beauty, of Greek origins.
In decorating, the Wabi Sabi philosophy is expressed in not-so-perfect interiors. That’s to say, in asymmetrical layouts, in raw and natural materials, in the value of the imperfect you can find in handmade products. No doubt, this is the most relevant aesthetic in interiors now.
According to this, perfect whitewashed walls are no trendy anymore. In place of them, aged and tactile wall finishes are the trendiest at present. To show you more about this, I’ve collected some inspiring images of the latest interior wall finishes for a perfect Wabi Sabi decor.

Ciao! Avete trascorso bene le vacanze invernali? Io sono rientrata da una pausa piuttosto lunga e felice di ricominciare un nuovo anno lavorativo insieme. Oggi riparto con un post dedicato ad una delle tendenze di interni chiave del 2018, lo stile Wabi Sabi.
Cos’è lo stile Wabi Sabi
Ne avevamo già parlato l’anno scorso, sia a proposito delle tendenze per il Natale qui che a proposito dello stile Japandi. Lo stile Wabi Sabi esiste già da qualche anno, ma gli esperti dicono che il suo anno sarà proprio il 2018.
Con il termine Wabi Sabi si intende una vera e propria filosofia di vita. Di origine giapponese, essa si basa sull’accettazione della transitorietà delle cose e sulla ricerca della bellezza nell’imperfezione. Insomma, il contrario del nostro concetto occidentale di bellezza di origine Greca.
Per quanto riguarda gli interni, il termine Wabi Sabi indica la tendenza decorativa più attuale oggi, che vede la trasformazione del minimalismo in qualcosa di più. Interni imperfetti, in cui prevale l’aspetto materico e tattile delle finiture sulla decorazione, in layout asimmetrici, nell’apprezzamento dell’imperfetto come valore del fatto a mano.
Detto questo, è chiaro come le pareti bianche o semplicemente dipinte non rientrino in questo tipo di estetica. Piuttosto, si torna a finiture dal valore tattile e dall’aspetto vissuto. Vediamo insieme quali.

1) Concrete Wall Finish Trend
Using raw concrete on your walls helps to bring an aged and Wabi Sabi touch to an interior. Far from creating an hard and cold feeling, typical of the industrial style, concrete can actually bring a warmer touch. This works well especially if concrete wall finishes are matched with soft and tactile textures and furnishings. Think for example about matching concrete with leather or with wood.
L’utilizzo del cemento grezzo a vista è una delle prime alternative per conferire agli interni un tocco Wabi Sabi. Cemento non è sinonimo di ambienti freddi, ma anzi è un materiale che se abbinato con i giusti arredi ed accessori riesce a dare un tocco vissuto e molto materico. Il trucco è accostarlo con elementi naturali e caldi, come ad esempio la pelle ed il legno naturale. In questo modo il cemento perde la sua connotazione fredda ed industriale.

2) Limewashed Wall Texture Paint
Limewashed walls are the big trend on wall finishes now. They look similar to cement walls but the difference of course is that walls have actually paint on them. With their soft texture of brush strokes, limewashed walls add a soft depthless to the home and an old charm with their patina and aged effect. This paint finish is coming more and more relevant today, replacing bold and uniform color finishes.

Le pareti a calce sono la tendenza in fatto di finiture per le pareti dell’ultimo periodo. Questo perché si tratta di semplici pareti dipinte, ma con un effetto materico che non ha nulla da invidiare a quello del cemento. Infatti, grazie all’effetto chiaroscuro delle pennellate, la superficie dipinta a calce aggiunge un tocco materico e di profondità, oltre ad un effetto vissuto.

3) Exposed Wall bricks Wall Finish Trend
Unfinished walls are another of the trendiest finishes at present. Bricks left untouched with their aged look can bring dimension and add a pattern, without the need to over decorate the space. The idea of no-perfect and unfinished goes together with no-perfect exposed bricks, with patinas and scratched walls. A similar effect can also be achieved with the latest chipped effect wallpapers.
Includo nella mia rassegna anche le pareti non finite, anche se non si tratta di una vera e propria finitura ma piuttosto della sua assenza. I mattoni lasciati a vista sono da sempre una delle opzioni preferite per le pareti, perché aggiungono tridimensionalità e pattern senza bisogno di ulteriori elementi decorativi. Mentre però fino a poco fa anche questo tipo di finitura era sinonimo di stile industriale, oggi è una delle preferite anche negli interni Scandinavi

4) Natural Wood Wall Finish Trend
Consider wood for creating wall accents, not just as a furniture finish. Nothing better than natural wood to add an aged effect, because wood is a live material that changes look with the passing of time.
Infine, va ripreso in considerazione il legno non solo come finitura per gli arredi ma come materiale per creare degli accenti a parete. Legno naturale, non trattato, un materiale vivo che cambia aspetto con il trascorrere del tempo ed è quindi perfetto per integrare un tocco di Wabi Sabi negli interni.
