This Monday I restart the blog and the week with this kitchen styling from North Europe but actually I’m telling you more about a 100% Italian kitchen design brand I met a few weeks ago. I’m sure you already spotted several times this industrial/vintage style kitchens in aluminium or bright colours, very popular in Scandi interiors.
They are produced here in Italy, in a small city in Emilia Romagna called Guastalla, by Italian kitchen brand Bertazzoni.
In early May I visited the brand’s factory and showroom, called Casa Bertazzoni: let’s do a short visit back together, today?

Come state? Passato bene il weekend?
Questo lunedì parto da questa immagine che arriva dal Nord per raccontarvi un marchio di cucine italianissimo e che ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere da vicino. Avrete visto molto spesso tra le immagini di styling di case Scandinave questi forni in stile industriale/vintage, in finitura alluminio o magari a colori, che vanno moltissimo proprio negli interni in stile Scandinavo ma non solo.
Queste cucine vengono da una piccola cittadina nella Pianura Padana di nome Guastalla, da un’azienda italiana di eccellenza nel settore cucine, Bertazzoni. Un’azienda di famiglia con una lunghissima storia, che ora esporta cucine di qualità e design dall’Italia in tutto il mondo.
Io ci sono stata a inizio maggio, a Casa Bertazzoni: venite a farvi un giro virtuale oggi?
Family. Food. Engineering.
These three words -written in Casa Bertazzoni entrance- recap all the brand’s philosophy.
Family means history: the story dates back to the Eighteenth century, when Francesco Bertazzoni started a small family company by creating precision balances to weight Parmesan cheese in Guastalla. Here, he noticed the wood burning stoves that were on the trains from Austria to Italy and he had the stroke of genius: adopting the same idea for cooking. His son Antonio opened the first factory in 1909, closed to Guastalla railway station, and soon become the most important producer of wood burning cooking stoves.
Food means homeland: which place is better than Emilia Romagna, the Italian region famous around the world for its amazing food, for producing cooking equipment?
Engineering means innovation: aka, keeping up with the times thanks to a continuous innovation. The very first innovation was at the beginning of Nineteenth century, when Napoleone Bertazzoni adopted the mass-production tecniques of the motor industry to the kitchen production. In the Fifities Bertazzoni introduced the first gas stoves, in the Sixties the first electic stoves. In the 2000s, the “Toyota system“was introduced to optimise the production by eliminating unecessary waste in natural and human resources.
Famiglia. Buon Cibo. Ingegneria.
Queste tre parole, scritte all’ingresso di Casa Bertazzoni, riassumono in breve tutta la filosofia dell’azienda.
Famiglia è la storia: una storia che inizia a fine Ottocento, quando Francesco Bertazzoni produceva bilance di precisione per pesare il Parmigiano Reggiano a Guastalla. Qui passavano anche i treni che collegavano l’Italia all’Austria ed è proprio osservando le stufe a legna che ne scaldavano i vagoni che nasce l’idea di iniziare a produrre le prime stufe a legna economiche per le cucine. Il figlio Antonio apre la prima fabbrica nel 1909, proprio vicino alla stazione ferroviaria di Guastalla, e presto diventa la più importante nella produzione di cucine economiche a legna.
Buon Cibo è il territorio: quale luogo migliore per la produzione di cucine se non l’Emilia Romagna, la regione Italiana famosa nel mondo per la sua cucina e i suoi prodotti culinari, da quelli stagionati come formaggio e prosciutto, alle carni bovine e suine, all’aceto e il vino?
Ingegneria è l’innovazione: un’innovazione che permette all’azienda di restare al passo con i tempi che cambiano. La prima grande innovazione avviene a inizio ‘900, quando Napoleone Bertazzoni decide di applicare le tecniche della produzione in serie delle case automobilistiche alla produzione delle cucine. La seconda innovazione arriva negli anni Cinquanta, di pari passo con la scoperta del gas arrivano le prime cucine a gas che sostituiscono quelle a legna. Negli anni Sessanta nascono anche le cucine elettriche, che affiancheranno la produzione di cucine a gas. Negli anni Duemila arriva l’altra grande innovazione del sistema produttivo con il “sistema Toyota“, che elimina gli sprechi di materiali e risorse umane.

Il Design.
The Logo.
It’s nice to see how design had a key role in the company history since the beginnings.
The FBG logo (Fratelli Bertazzoni Guastalla) for example was registered back in 1923 but it was so up to date that it’s almost the same nowadays. Indeed, in the three logo circles there already were the three key values (family, homeland, innovation) that never changed during these years.
Looking back at the historical graphics showcased in Casa Bertazzoni, it is clear that design was a key element already from the Thirties!

Il Logo.
E’ bello vedere come il design ha accompagnato questa lunga storia sin dagli inizi.
Già nel lontano 1923 infatti veniva registrato il logo FBG (Fratelli Bertazzoni Guastalla), un logo talmente attuale che rimane quasi invariato in tutti questi anni. Infatti all’interno dei tre cerchi ci sono quei tre valori di famiglia, territorio ed innovazione (ovvero la ruota alata, simbolo dell’innovazione dei trasporti celeri ossia la ferrovia) che non sono mai cambiati in tutti questi anni.
Curiosando nella storia dell’azienda a Casa Bertazzoni la vocazione al design si vede ovunque, già nelle prime grafiche che negli anni trenta venivano fornite ai rivenditori delle cucine!

Design, Style & Color.
Design and style goes together with tech and innovation, and vice-versa.
For example, one of the key features of Bertazzoni kitchens – bright color– is itself the result of the contamination between homeland, innovation and design. In fact, Emilia Romagna is known also as “Motor Valley” because here there are some of the most famous car and motorbike factories of the world (see Ferrari, Ducati, Maserati, Lamborghini): their colours inspired the Bertazzoni colors of the Professional Series.
The inspiration is more than about style: indeed, the latest painting processes of car industry are applied to Bertazzoni kitchens, which are coated in a double stainless steel casing with an high gloss finish, the same as the car’s one. Other colors and palettes characterize also other series, such as the Prima Series (inspired by vintage colors) and the Master one.
Design means also collaborating with well known or young talented designers for the creation of bertazzoni collections. For example, the ultra-modern Design Series was designed by Stefano Giovannoni, italian architect and designer creator of several iconic design pieces.

Design, Stile e Colore.
Design e ricerca stilistica accompagnano anche la tecnologia e l’innovazione, e viceversa.
Uno dei caratteri distintivi delle cucine Bertazzoni di oggi, il colore, è ad esempio il risultato di una continua contaminazione tra i concetti di territorio, innovazione e design. Qui in Emilia Romagna infatti hanno sede alcuni tra gli stabilimenti di auto e moto più noti al mondo (vedi Ferrari, Ducati, Maserati, Lamborghini) ed è proprio ai loro colori che si ispira la palette cromatica della Serie Professional.
L’ispirazione non si limita però al solo livello estetico: i più attuali processi di verniciatura sviluppati nel settore auto infatti vengono anche applicati alle cucine, che sono rivestite in un doppio rivestimento in acciaio inossidabile e una verniciatura lucida resistente ad acidi e a calore. Palette di colori diversi, ma sempre frutto di una lunga ricerca stilistica, caratterizzano ad esempio anche le Serie Prima (ispirata ai colori vintage) e Master.
Design significa anche collaborazione attiva dell’azienda con i designer, sia con giovani talenti che con nomi noti come ad esempio Stefano Giovannoni, creatore della ultra-moderna Serie Design.

From Guastalla to…
Today Bertazzoni exports in more than 60 Countries and 90% of the production is exported. We can say that every two minutes a Bertazzoni kitchen is installed in a house, somewhere in the world, fitting the local kitchen tradition and needs without loosing the Italian design and value.

Da Guastalla a…
Oggi il 90% della produzione Bertazzoni è rivolta all’export. L’azienda esporta in oltre 60 Paesi e in pratica ogni due minuti una cucina Bertazzoni viene installata in una qualche casa da qualche parte del mondo. Bertazzoni arriva nel cuore delle case, si adatta alle tradizioni e alle peculiarità locali, senza perdere i tratti distintivi del design e del saper fare italiano.
Ditemi poi se non è un bell’esempio Italiano di cui parlare per cominciare con ottimismo la settimana ^_^
