I must confess: I’m already thinking about summer holidays.
Ok it’s not because I am already exhausted about work, but the fact is that if you want to organize a far and long trip (like the one I did last year, with a tour of Malaysia and Singapore) it takes a long time and lot of money. And by booking far in advance you save a lot on flights, so it is a fact that just after Christmas I start thinking about the summer trip, even if it sounds weird!
This year I am thinking of a completely different place from last year, I fancy about a tour in Iceland. It seems the right place to make a long road tour, with fascinating landscapes completely different from those ones we are used to. Some of you already been there?
Will keep you updated… however, while I was doing some research on the web, I came across this amazing project in a ice cave which has a lot to do with lighting design.
Today I explain you how the longest ice cave in a glacier was lightened.
Langjökull Glacier ice cave, in Iceland…
it’s the longest man-made glacier ice tunnel in Europe.
30 meters below the surface, the tunnel goes 550 meters deep inside the solid glacial ice of the Langjökull, which is the second largest glacier in Europe.
Can you imagine how amazing must be to find yourself just in the middle of a glacier? Quite scaring also, but so fascinating …Here white colour really must have an unique and incredible shade, cold and neutral, you can’t find anywhere else.
That’s why the lighting design has really a key role in such an incredible space.
Into The Glacier – Langjökull Glacier

EFLA Consulting Engineers was in charge for the lighting studio of Into The Glacier – Langjökull Glacier project, facing several design challenges.
- First, the aim was to provide a natural and unique experience, with natural light colours to best represent the “blue ice” hue
- Second, equipment and cables must be hidden from view. Ok: now if you are an interior designer, just imagine this thing and what it must be to keep all cables and everything hidden inside a glacier…
- Third, more technical issue. The temperature is consistently around 0 degrees Celsius, so the heat from LED lighting had to be minimal in order to prevent melting.
These points were achieved with cool LED lighting sources.
By raising lighting equipment from the ice so that it is never in direct contact with it, as well as having a tight network of sensors and precisely programmed DMX controllers to limit the light-time to 5–7 minutes. All equipment were placed inside the walls and ceilings, with light sources of up to 6 metres in length, without visible cables, control tables or light sources.
Ok now I repeat the question: how amazing must be to walk inside here?

Ve lo devo confessare: sto già pensando alle vacanze di Agosto.
Non perché io sia già esaurita e stanca del lavoro, anzi, ma il fatto è che per organizzare un viaggio mediamente complesso (penso tipo al tour dell’anno scorso di Malesia e Singapore) ci vogliono da un lato tempo e dall’altro soldi. Prenotando molto in anticipo si risparmia sui voli, e quindi è un fatto che passato Natale io già penso al viaggio dell’estate.
Quest’anno mi sto informando su una meta completamente diversa da quella dell’anno scorso e che mi affascina da molto, l’ Islanda. Sembra il posto ideale per fare un bel tour in auto come piace a me, per visitare paesaggi completamente diversi da quelli a cui siamo abituati. Qualcuno di voi per caso ci è già stato?
Vi terrò aggiornati…comunque, mentre facevo le mie ricerche sul web mi sono imbattuta in questa cosa pazzesca, che ha molto a che fare anche con il tema del design della luce.
Oggi vi spiego come è stata illuminata la caverna di ghiaccio più grande d’Europa.
La grotta nel ghiacciaio Langjökull , in Islanda…
è il tunnel artificiale sotto a un ghiacciaio più lungo d’Europa.
30 metri sotto la superficie, per una lunghezza di 550 metri all’interno del ghiacciaio Langjökull, il secondo più grande d’Europa.
Ora pensate a cosa dev’essere ritrovarsi al centro di un ghiacciaio? Magari la cosa vi mette ansia, a me in realtà affascina non poco…Penso anche solo ai colori che si possono osservare in questo luogo, anzi ai non-colori e alla perfezione del bianco ghiaccio.
E’ per questo che lo studio della luce diventa davvero essenziale.
Into The Glacier – Langjökull Glacier

Il progetto è stato seguito dallo studio islandese EFLA Consulting Engineers , ed è stata una vera e propria sfida in termini di illuminazione. Possiamo in maniera molto grossolana individuare questi grossi problemi:
- La necessità di dare ai visitatori un’esperienza unica e quanto possibile naturale, e ciò significa non falsare i colori. Allo stesso tempo, trovare una luce che valorizzi la particolare tonalità blu del ghiaccio
- Cavi eccetera dovevano essere completamente nascosti. Ora, se questa cosa in alcuni casi per noi progettisti è un problema già in spazi più convenzionali, immaginiamoci cosa doveva essere nascondere tutto in un ghiacciaio
- Infine, un problema più tecnico. La temperatura non va mai sopra lo zero e il calore delle luci rischiava di fare sciogliere il ghiaccio
Il tutto è stato risolto con un sistema di illuminazione fredda LED studiato nei minimi dettagli.
Tutte le sorgenti sono state alzate dal ghiaccio in modo da non essere mai in contatto diretto, oltre ad avere un sistema di sensori che limita la durata della luce ad un massimo di 5-7 minuti. Nessun cavo a vista, nessun faretto a vista, con attrezzature nascoste e fonti di luce ad oltre sei metri di altezza.
