Invisible Outlines Nendo, Milan Design Week 2017

Today we go to visit the most beautiful installation of Fuorisalone 2017.

Ok I’m a bit partial on this. I’m following studio Nendo for years, last year I even interviewed Oki Sato and after talking with him in person I follow the projects with even more interest.

This year it was really the Nendo Milan Design Week, judging from the line that was out of the Jil Sander showroom (where Invisible Outlines took place). If you gave up with the line, or if you just didn’t go to Fuorisalone this year, I will show you more today on the blog about Invisible Outlines by Nendo.

Ok sono di parte. Sono anni che seguo lo studio Nendo. L’anno scorso ho anche intervistato Oki Sato e dopo averci parlato di persona, a questo genio giapponese stranamente alto ed estremamente gentile, seguo i progetti con ancora più interesse.

Quest’anno a giudicare dalla fila che c’era fuori dalla showroom Jil Sander (trasformata da Nendo con l’installazione Invisible Outlines) è stato davvero l’anno della consacrazione di Oki Sato a star della Milano Design Week (era ora!). Se vista la coda ci avete rinunciato, o se semplicemente non siete stati quest’anno al Fuorisalone, vi ci porto io oggi qui nel blog.

Invisible Outlines

explores the ideas of “outlines”, of contours that define the inside and the outside, with a new idea of outlines. By blurring up the outlines of items in different ways, the viewers explore a different perception of the objects, recreating mentally the invisible outlines.

The installation puts together 16 different collections that explore this concept in different ways, in an amazing setting with a bright and minimal design. I’ve especially loved the “border table”, which is a super minimal table of 5 cm diameters linked with the room corners and edges, and the “jellyfish vase”: a new vase made of ultrathin transparent silicon that float in the water.

Invisible Outlines esplora l’idea di “contorno” e di come i contorni definiscano interno ed esterno: attraverso diversi tipi di manipolazione dei contorni, gli oggetti perdono consistenza e contorni invisibili vengono ricreati mentalmente nel cervello di chi vede gli oggetti. Appunto. le “invisible outlines”.

L’installazione mette insieme 16 diverse collezioni che esplorano questo concetto in modi diversi, il tutto in un interno spettacolare nel suo estremo minimalismo. Mi hanno colpito in particolare i piccoli “border table”, delle semplici aste metalliche che sfruttano bordi e spigoli delle stanze, e il “jellyfish vase”: un vaso in silicone trasparente ultrasottile, tinto due volte in modo che sembri galleggiare nell’acqua grazie ad un effetto ottico.
