A Glimpse into the Future of Home Design

Milan Design Week is back, and with it comes a wave of fresh ideas, innovative materials, and thought-provoking conversations. Every year, thousands of previews flood our inboxes, hinting at what’s to come. But spotting the truly transformative trends—the ones that will shape design for years—is no easy task. At TRENDBARK, we pride ourselves on identifying the most relevant shifts, and it’s exciting to see so many elements from last year’s Milano Trendbook now taking center stage.

Here are some first five key trends we expect to see at Milan Design Week 2025 and that hopefully are inspiring you too.

____

1. The Rise of Soft Minimalism

A new evolution of minimalism continues to gain momentum—what we previously highlighted in last year’s Trendbook as Soft Minimalism. This approach refines the warm minimalism aesthetic by blending simplicity with a heightened sense of comfort, mindfulness, and tactile richness. It focuses on serene, well-balanced spaces that encourage relaxation and well-being, emphasizing craftsmanship, organic materials, and a deep connection to nature.

Brera Design Apartment stands out as a key showcase of this trend, proving that minimalism can be both sophisticated and inviting. A prime example is Orizzonti (Horizons) by Zanellato/Bortotto studio, a project that masterfully intertwines craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and materiality. Through thoughtful use of surfaces, colors, and textures, it tells a new story—one that honors tradition while embracing contemporary sensibilities.

2. The Power of Metals in Design

While soft and warm aesthetics continue to thrive, an opposing trend is gaining traction—raw, industrial, and metal-driven design. Materials like iron, steel, and aluminum are taking center stage in contemporary interiors, valued for their durability, versatility, and sustainable potential. This approach embraces the beauty of unfinished textures, structural integrity, and a refined, minimalist edge.

At Nilufar Depot, the Fosbury Architecture collective presents a bold installation delving into the diverse possibilities of metal, highlighting its strength and adaptability. Meanwhile, aluminum emerges as a standout material for its infinite recyclability and innovative applications. Leading this movement, Hydro—the pioneer behind the world’s first 100% post-consumer aluminum—returns at Capsule Plaza with the visionary R100 project, unveiling five groundbreaking designs crafted entirely within a 100 km radius of Milan.

3. The Boom of the Sleep Economy

In 2025, sleep is the ultimate luxury. Studies, including the Edelman Barometer, highlight how sleep deprivation is becoming an indicator of wealth inequality. With growing awareness of sleep’s impact on health, brands are investing heavily in the sleep economy, offering innovative solutions for rest and relaxation.

During Milan Design Week, Marimekko and Laila Gohar present an immersive bedroom-themed installation at Teatro Litta, exploring the rituals of sleep and the objects that surround it. Their bold, contrasting designs, featuring Marimekko’s signature stripes, bring a fresh and artistic perspective to the world of sleep and comfort.

4. Inspired by Water

Water remains a profound source of inspiration for designers, influencing both material innovation and sustainability efforts. Its aesthetic and sensory qualities—fluidity, reflection, and transparency—continue to shape interior and product design.

At Euroluce 2025, Lasvit unveils Soaked in Light, an installation inspired by the calming effect of water. Research suggests that vast bodies of water activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to reduce stress and enhance well-being. Through glass and light, Lasvit translates this phenomenon into a mesmerizing environment designed to slow the heart rate and foster relaxation.

5. The Debate on Inclusivity in Design

As Milan Design Week grows, so does the discussion around accessibility and inclusivity in design. Originally conceived as a free event, the increasing costs of accommodation, exhibitions, and participation are raising concerns. How can we champion inclusive design when the industry itself is becoming increasingly exclusive?

Beyond aesthetics and trends, this year’s discussions are delving into the economic barriers of design. Can Milan Design Week maintain its open and creative spirit while addressing these growing disparities? The conversation is just beginning, and it’s an essential one for the future of the industry.
