#MYHOMERESTYLING | Bathtub to Shower Conversion

I told you here about my small bathroom makeover and the ideas for its new design. My bathroom restyling was actually the result of a practical need, the one of converting my bathtub into a shower.

People divide into two categories: the one who use bathtub and the ons who use shower. Well, I am the second. And you?

In this post I’m telling you how it was the process for turning my bathtub into a shower. But before let’s go through some general things to consider before.

Vi raccontavo qui del progetto di makeover del mio piccolo bagno e del fatto che è nato dall’esigenza pratica di trasformare la vasca in doccia.

Secondo me le persone si dividono in due categorie: quelli che fanno il bagno, anche se solo ogni tanto, e chi fa sempre la doccia. Bene, io appartengo di sicuro alla seconda categoria.

In questo articolo vi racconto come ho trasformato la vasca in doccia (e insieme poi tutto il bagno). Ma prima bisogna fare qualche considerazione tecnica.

Things to consider before starting a bathtub to shower conversion

Converting a tub to a shower presents several good opportunities such as upgrading the layout by adding new shelves and niches, also to upgrade lighting and venting. But before starting there are some things you maybe did not consider:

✓ Tiles

What will be of the lower area of the walls in place of the old bathtub? Are you considering to change your bathoom tiles/cladding or not? Do you have some spare tiles to cover it? If not, consider some options with wall showers (as I did)

✓ Drain

Always ask your plumbing to check for draining conditions and position.

✓ Doors and Windows

Make sure there is room for the door to swing open without hitting anything, or consider a sliding door (as I did)

Second question, is your bathtub near a window? In this case you may need to do further consideration. A shower near a window looks beautiful but it’s not always a great idea because of the moldings and infiltrations it may cause on the window frames

✓ Shower curb

If you are dreaming about a clean shower without a shower curb, that’s to say in the same level of your bathroom flooring, consider higher costs and that it’s not always possible. Curbless shower stalls are so beautiful but trickier, because the drainage slope of the floor need to be below the level of the surrounding flooring surface. Two possibilities then, or raising the surrounding floor, or lowering the shower pan. As you can imagine, this is not an easy thing for a simple makeover on an existing bathroom. Showers with curb or high tray are of course then easier and cheaper to install (as I did).

Trasformare una vasca in doccia dà una serie di vantaggi a cominciare da un migliore utilizzo dello spazio, ed è perciò l’ideale per bagni di piccole dimensioni. Prima però ricordatevi di fare alcune considerazioni pratiche:

✓ Piastrelle

Cosa andate a mettere nella fascia inferiore della parete al posto della vasca? Cambierete anche tutto il rivestimento del bagno oppure no? Se no, avete conservato delle piastrelle uguali a quelle della vostra parete? Se no, prendete in considerazione una cabina doccia con nuove pareti (come ho fatto io)

✓ Scarichi

Chiedete sempre ad un idraulico di verificare condizione e posizione dello scarico

✓ Porte e Finestre

Tenete in considerazione lo spazio per aprire una nuova porta, oppure sceglietene una scorrevole (come ho fatto io)

Seconda domanda, la vostra vasca è vicino a una finestra? In questo caso dovrete fare qualche considerazione in più, perché le docce vicino alle finestre sono molto belle ma altrettanto problematiche (leggi: muffa e infiltrazioni sugli infissi)

✓ Piatto doccia

Se sogni una doccia super minimale con piatto a filo pavimento, non è detto che si possa sempre fare. Questo perché serve una pendenza per lo scarico e ovviamente se il piatto è a filo con il resto o abbassi il livello della doccia o alzi quello del pavimento del bagno. Cosa piuttosto complicata e non molto conveniente nel caso di un semplice restyling di bagno esistente.

There are bathtub to shower conversion systems that will make you save a lot of money and time.

I chose the Revolution shower by Novellini:

It is a super fast and beautiful bathtub to shower conversion system which enquires minimal building work.

It also gives the possibility to choose between a very large shower (same area of the tub) or a smaller one, by using the remaining the space for a new cabinet. The cabinet can be 30 cm wide, to fit some open and closed shelves and a small bench, or wider to contain for example the washing machine. I chose the 30 cm cabinet so I could finally design a very light and open cabinet for the washbasin.

The Revolution shower is also highly customizable with different finishes. I chose white for the walls, to fit with the tiles we repainted, and black for frames, and curb.

As I told you here I was looking for a very clean design in black and white. I also had to chose an high tray because of the existing plumbings so I decided to chose it in black as hiding was impossible! Here a few first pics but will show you more next week.

Esistono sistemi per trasformare la vasca in doccia che fanno risparmiare tempo e denaro.

Io ho scelto il sistema Revolution di Novellini:

E’ un sistema molto veloce e bello per trasformare la vasca in doccia che richiede minimi interventi di muratura.

C’è inoltre la possibilità di scegliere tra un grande piatto doccia (ovvero con la stessa area della vasca) oppure uno più piccolo, per utilizzare lo spazio rimanente come mobile contenitore. Il mobile può essere di larghezza 30 cm, con mensole e ante chiuse ed una piccola seduta, oppure più largo in modo da contenere ad esempio la lavatrice. Io ho scelto il mobile più stretto così ho potuto far fare un mobile lavandino aperto su misura.

La doccia Revolution si può inoltre personalizzare con tante finiture diverse. Io ho scelto il bianco per le pareti e il mobile, e il nero per i profili e il piatto doccia.

Come vi raccontavo qui l’idea era quella di un bagno in bianco e nero, pratico e minimale. Ho dovuto optare per il piatto doccia alto a causa degli scarichi esistenti e a questo punto l’ho scelto in nero, tanto nasconderlo era impossibile! Ecco alcune foto, vi mostrerò di più a breve.

How it Works | Revolution by Novellini

The new shower can be installed in one working day. But before, you have to do some easy works with a plumber and a construction worker, then by the installer. Here what was done in my bathroom:

to demolish the old bathtub and prepare the flooring
to check and move drain
to prepare a flooring surface same level as the bathroom new flooring
to first place the new shower tray
to place then the new shower frames
to enjoy your new shower!
