Patterned tiles are one of the strongest trends in interiors at present.
Adding some pattern can bring in personality and add some softness even in the most impersonal space, like sometimes bathrooms and kitchens can be. That’s why everybody loves patterned tiles now. But do you know where the inspiration for the latest patterned tiles comes from?
From the past, of course. Mainly from the cement tiles and the majolica tiles.

Aggiungere una nota di pattern ad un ambiente, grazie a delle piastrelle decorate, conferisce personalità e dona una nota di calore anche agli spazi più impersonali, come spesso ad esempio possono essere le cucine ed i bagni. Ecco perché ormai tutti amano le piastrelle di questo tipo. Ma l’ispirazione per le piastrelle del momento da dove arriva?
Dal passato, ovviamente. Da due filoni principali, quello delle cementine e delle maioliche.

The cement tiles were invented at the end of 19th century, as a consequence of the Portland cement invention.
As the name says, they are made of concrete and the color in the pattern comes from mineral pigments which are mixed into a mold. They were extremely popular in the Thirties (especially in Italy!), till around the 1950’s, when they lost importance as people preferred less colourful and less expensive floor finishes. At the beginning of this century the trend started slowly to come back, till rising very much in popularity in the last years.
The standard size was 20cm x 20cm and they have a matt finish.

Le cementine sono state inventate alla fine dell’Ottocento, in seguito alla scoperta del cemento Portland.
Come dice il nome, sono fatte di un impasto di cemento e il loro colore deriva da quello dei pigmenti minerali mescolati nello stampo. Erano super popolari negli anni Trenta (soprattutto in Italia!), perché un pavimento più economico rispetto agli altri diffusi all’epoca (ad esempio, il terrazzo). Dagli anni ’50 hanno cominciato a scomparire, fino ad essere riscoperte in questo secolo e a diventare una vera e propria tendenza negli ultimi anni.
La dimensione standard era di 20cm x 20cm e hanno una finitura opaca.

The majolica tiles history goes much more back in time.
Majolica refers to a special ceramic in bright colours and glossy surfaces, and its name comes from the Maiòrica or Maiòrca isle, where it was first created: it is a low-fire ceramic earthenware which was covered with an opaque white glaze and decorated with colored pigments. Majolica became very popular during Renaissance in the Mediterranean area and different areas developed their own majolicas. For example, in Portugal they are called azulejos and they are mainly in white and blue, because of the wide import of Chinese ceramics during the XVII century.
Majolica tiles have tile with a brightly colored, glossy surface.

La storia delle maioliche va molto più indietro nel tempo.

Today, these amazing patterned historical tiles are the inspiration for the trendiest ceramic tiles.
Thanks to the latest technologies in the ceramic and stoneware production (I will tell you more about this soon, because I recently visited one of the most important factories in this production), cement tiles and majolica discover a new -and definetely more afforable – life with the new tiling collections. They are back as one of the favorite flooring finish for home interiors.
In the last Cersaie there were some interesting new collections of tiles inspired by cement tiles and majolica by Ragno , an Italian brand focused in the tiles for residential spaces.

Eden is a reinterpretation of majolica with a new waxy effect, bright but at the same time soft to the touch.
The one-on-tone shade and the damaged edges reproduce the marks left by time and they are another good option to add personality, warmth and pattern into homes. At the beginning they were just available in the 7×28 cm size, now also in the hex format and patchwork decor matches.

Eden è una reinterpretazione della maiolica con un nuovo effetto cerato, che le rende brillanti ma allo stesso tempo vellutate al tatto.
Il tono su tono e i bordi rovinati raccontano il passare del tempo e sono anch’esse una piastrella perfetta per donare calore, aggiungere decoro e conferire personalità alla casa. Inizialmente erano disponibili solo nel formato a mattoncino 7×28 cm, oggi sono prodotte anche nell’attualissimo formato esagonale e nella variante decorativa a patchwork.

A_Mano is another interpretation of majolica.
Traditional patterns are transformed into really contemporary geometrical patterns, with a bright finish which refers to the majolica brightness. The tiles are available in 12 different decors, 2 modular motifs in 3 colour variants, to give the maximum freedom of matches and combinations.
