Ok today I must tell you this. Being a design blogger is such an awesome job. You have the chance to see things for real and to do experiences you would have never thought before.
For example? Enjoy a tour at Milan Salone del Mobile to hear the story of one of your favourite chairs.
Which one? The iconic n°14 chair by Thonet, also known as bistrot chair or Vienna chair.
I just love it because of its retro mood despite being so contemporary at present. It’s the perfect chair for a Scandinavian style space, but also for those interiors more eclectic with a vintage twist I heart.

About Thonet 14 bentwood chair
Before a great design icon there is always a brilliant intuition (remember the Earl of Chesterfield one for his couch here?).
14 Chair is a creation of Michael Thonet, skilled cabinetmaker and craftsman, who had this strange obsession with wood and bending wood. “Bend or break” and finally, after several years of broken branches, he made it. And it was able to translate an artisanal tecnique into an industrial one, to be reproducted over and over again. The typical timber curve is obtained by working wood 104 ° steam for six hours, then dried in an oven at 70 °degrees.
The amazing thing is at present, at Thonet , the method is exactly the same!

But there’s more than this innovation in No. 14 chair.
Thonet was able to divide this chair in six pieces, held together with ten screws. For the first time, the back and the legs were a single piece, in bentwood. He was able to pack 36 chairs in one cubic meter, and to ship his No. 14 chairs around the world: they were beautiful, solid and cheap.
Here it comes with the history of modern design.

All’epoca infatti costavano pochi fiorini!
