TILE TRENDS for 2022 from Cersaie

Looking for inspiration about ceramic and tiles? In this article you will find 5 new tile trends for 2022 and more!

Last week was the week of one of my favorite fairs, Cersaie in Bologna: the most important event on global scale for the ceramics and bathroom design.

While researching among all the previews, I selected new collections by Italian brand Casalgrande Padana which in my opinion are in line with some of the most relevant tile trends for the next year.

In the meantime, don’t forget to follow @italianbark on Instagram as I will be sharing my finds from the fair in the IG Stories. See you there!

TILE TRENDS 2022

5 new trends in ceramic design

1 / Tile Trends 2022

Wabi Sabi &Japanese wood

We have been talking about the Wabi Sabi aesthetics as a big trend for years now ( first article about this dates back to January 2018! ). Personally I love this trend and all things related to Japanese design, so when I saw Gendai Wood, the new wooden-effect tiles by Casalgrande Padana inspired to Shou Sugi Ban, I couldn’t wait to share it.

Shou Sugi Ban’ ( also called Yakisugi, as we were mentioning in this post with the 5 words to know now from Japanese design )  is an ancient Japanese wood technique born in the 1300s century. The technique consists in the carbonization at high temperatures of the Japanese cedar or cypress wood, that is then sealed with oil, obtaining a special finish with rich and deep veins.

The Gendai Wood collection, with its 5 different colors, is inspired to this old Japanese art and it’s perfect for those who are looking for a highly decorative wooden floor and at the same time all the practicality of ceramic tiles.

Contemporary “terrazzo alla veneziana”

Another trend which is here to stay is the terrazzo finish. We have seen it in so many alternatives – but probably the most fascinating one is always the original. Called ‘terrazzo alla veneziana’ , it has been for centuries one of the most renowned floorings in Italian villas, especially in North-East Italy and Venice. The original terrazzo was made up of marble and stone granules up to 40 mm in diameter, held together with cement mixed with cocciopesto.

Called Le Ville by Casalgrande Padana refers directly to this terrazzo flooring. But, while the original terrazzo flooring is quite expensive and not that easy to keep, its version in ceramic tiles is much more affordable and practical. Available in six different graphics and colour gradations, Le Ville is also available with the Grip – a non-slip surface which makes it suitable also for the outdoor.

To give it a very contemporary twist, Le Ville can be combined with Atelier, the tile collection in 8 trendy colors to decorate with color block.

Natural stones

When talking about tile trends for the next year, we must for sure include all the stone-effect ceramic tiles. Nature is the very first inspiration for the interior and design in this historical moment – in fact, because of the pandemic, everybody is seeking now more than ever to bring nature inside home, and this is clearly reflected in the new proposals from our industry’s brands.

Stile is the new collection by Casalgrande Padana totally inspired to natural stones: with its six different colors (Stile Beige, Black, French Grey, Pale e White Smoke) and seven sizes, it’s a super versatile collection of tiles perfect for many styles of interiors – from the most contemporary, to even classic ones.

Warm woods

If you were thinking that wooden effect tiles already had their moment, I must tell you that you’re wrong. In fact, wood is now more on-trend than ever – and, together with it, wooden effect tiles, as long as they look natural. If you are wondering which wooden colors and essences are the favorite now, the trend goes towards warm and yellowish hues, which are the best to create soft and cosy atmospheres.

For this reason, according to the latest trend researches – including a recent trend consultancy we gave about flooring trends, oak is still the favorite wood essence by people.

Slavonia is the new collection by Casalgrande Padana totally inspired to oak: it is available in six different colors, but all of them are distinguishes by a warm undertone which gives any interior a cosy, cheerful and homey feel.

Antibacterial treatments for safe & clean surfaces

Last but not least, one of the key trend in tile design for 2022 will be for sure about creating antibacterial surfaces, thanks to new technologies which auto-clean the ceramics from bacteria. We do not need to specify the reason for this trend, right? But one year and a half ago we were mentioning this, together with other new future trends in design brought by the pandemic crisis.

For example, Bios Antibacterial® is the name of the special treatment available on Casalgrande Padana tiles, which eliminate 99% of the four main bacterial strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) that you may find on surfaces. This happens thanks to a silver ion technology that blocks the metabolism of bacteria, eliminating them and preventing their proliferation.
