Some of you may know that I’m a Sicilian living in London. Here in the UK we are experiencing a very warm Summer, which is at the same time unusual and really nice. In fact, London is at its best when you can drink al fresco and enjoy a walk after dinner.

Despite this, I find myself missing my beloved Sicily. It is the place where nature is so beautiful that is almost overwhelming. When you’ll see its shiny sun, bright and scented citrus fruit, colourful vegetation and blue sea, you’ll wish you’d never have to leave!

Sicily is one of the best places to be in this period of the year. Many of you are still planning their holidays and I thought I would give you a little suggestion with some amazing Design Hotels in Sicily.

Design Hotels in Sicily: the interior design

They are all boutique hotels, which means they usually have less rooms than standard hotels. Very often the rooms are all different from each other and a homey feeling permeate the space. Obviously they care very much about their interior design, with a great attention to details.

Style wise there’s a lot of Mediterranean features obviously (and if you want to discover more about Italian Mediterranean Style here is an article for you). I particularly love when old and new are mixed carefully. The result is a space that feels fresh (as opposed to the really warm weather outside), it tells the story of the area thanks to the use of local materials (such us majolica tiles and lava stone) and is yet very contemporary. Forse alcuni di voi sanno che sono una Siciliana trasferita a Londra. Qui nel Regno Unito è arrivata un’estate caldissima, che è allo stesso tempo insolita e davvero carina. In effetti Londra dà il suo meglio quando puoi bere un drink all’aperto e goderti una passeggiata dopo cena.

Nonostante ciò, mi ritrovo a sognare la mia amata Sicilia, che è uno dei posti migliori in cui trovarsi in questo periodo dell’anno. La Sicilia è un luogo in cui la natura è così bella che ti travolge. Basta vedere il suo sole splendente, gli agrumi profumati, la vegetazione colorata e il mare blu, per sperare di non dover mai andare via!

Molti di voi stanno ancora programmando le loro vacanze e ho pensato di darvi un piccolo suggerimento. Se state pensando di andare in Sicilia quest’estate potreste provare uno di questi incredibili soggiorni di design. Ho selezionato solo boutique hotel, che rispetto agli hotel standard hanno molte meno camere. Spesso le stanze sono tutte diverse l’una dall’altra e un’atmosfera accogliente permea gli spazi. Ovviamente anche il design degli interni è molto curato, con grande attenzione ai dettagli.

Mi piace particolarmente quando elementi vecchi e nuovi vengono mescolati con cura. Il risultato è uno spazio fresco (al contrario del clima molto caldo all’esterno), che racconta la storia del luogo grazie all’uso di materiali locali (come maioliche e pietra lavica) ed è comunque contemporaneo. This luxury B&B is located in Lipari, which is the largest of the Aeolian Islands. The beautiful two floors building was originally built between 1700s and 1800s and it was completely renovated in 2015. On their website the owners proudly talk you through the decorating process: “ The building was renovated with extra care to preserve its original style and interior decoration by using modern materials such as majolica tiles and lava stone, as well as original furnishings, such as tiles from Santo Stefano Di Camastra and Naples. A beautiful Mediterranean garden decorates the inner courtyard”.

Questo lussuoso B&B si trova a Lipari, la più grande delle Isole Eolie. Il bellissimo edificio a due piani è stato originariamente costruito tra il 1700 e il 1800 ed è stato completamente rinnovato nel 2015. Sul loro sito web i proprietari descrivono con orgoglio il processo di design: “L’edificio è stato ristrutturato con estrema cura per preservare il suo stile originale e la decorazione degli interni utilizzando materiali moderni come maioliche e pietra lavica, oltre a pezzi originali, come le piastrelle da Santo Stefano Di Camastra e Napoli. Un bel giardino mediterraneo decora il cortile interno“.

This one is probably the most high-end hotel on this list. And yet I’m surprised by the simplicity of its earthy, natural look. Evocative lighting, truth to materials and an atmosphere of luxurious cosiness lead this project.Located on the island of Pantelleria, it’s housed in old and newly-built Dammusi, the traditional local architecture. Interior elements include custom-made furniture pieces and accessories, handcrafted with high attention to detail and research into materials, to highlight their natural colours and rough textures.

Questo è probabilmente l’hotel più esclusivo su questa lista. Nonostante questo, è sorprendente la semplicità del suo aspetto rustico e naturale. L’illuminazione evocativa, il rispetto dei materiali e un’atmosfera di lussuosa intimità dominano questo progetto. Situato sull’isola di Pantelleria, si trova in antichi e recentemente costruiti Dammusi, la tradizionale architettura locale. Zash Hotel è un agriturismo immerso nella natura. La sua principale caratteristica è infatti la vista sul mare e sul vulcano Etna in ogni stanza.
