DESIGN TRAVELS | Visit Berlin from West to East, part 2

In last post, I’ve shared the first part of my Visit Berlin posts with some pics and sightseeing from Postdarmerplatz, Mitte and Alexanderplatz areas, the most tourist ones. Let’s continue the short tour today by moving towards South, then to the Eastern Berlin, to visit some typical areas i’ve really loved of the city | Nello scorso post, prima parte del mio veloce tour di Berlino, sono tornata virtualemente nelle zone di Postdarmerplatz, Mitte e Alexanderplatz, ricche di luoghi turistici da visitare: oggi invece vi porto in zone un pò meno popolari di Berlino, ma molto caratteristiche, e sono quelle che ho preferito di tutta la città.

As I told you in last post, I had just to free days to discover the city that’s why I’ve preferred to wander around the different neighboroughs more than visiting museum.

However, I knew I couldn’t miss one museum, the Judisches Museum: and I was right! The building is really a work of art: designed by architect Daniel Libeskind, the museum has an unique architecture with a shape that represents a decomposed start of David and for which it is also called Blitz, thunder in German.

For Libeskind, [quote]“The new design, which was created a year before the Berlin Wall came down was based on three conception that formed the museum’s foundation: first, the impossibility of understanding the history of Berlin without understanding the enormous intellectual, economic and cultural contribution made by the Jewish citizens of Berlin, second, the necessity to integrate physically and spiritually the meaning of the Holocaust into the consciousness and memory of the city of Berlin. Third, that only through the acknowledgement and incorporation of this erasure and void of Jewish life in Berlin, can the history of Berlin and Europe have a human future.”à (source Wikipedia)[/quote]

Come vi dicevo nello scorso articolo, avendo avuto poco tempo a disposizione ho preferito camminare per le varie zone della città piuttosto di rinchiudermi tra musei. Non potevo però non visitarne uno, il Museo Ebraico progettato da Daniel Libeskind: e ne è davvero valsa la pensa, l’edificio di per sè è una vera e propria opera d’arte.

L’architetto ha denominato il progetto between the lines (tra le linee) proprio perchè tutto l’edificio è studiato sulla base di linee spezzate e di intersezioni, che simboleggiano la storia travagliata e drammatica del popolo ebraico nel corso dei secoli.

Un percorso che parte dal piano interrato e arriva in alto, a ripercorrere tutta la storia di persecuzione del popolo ebraico. Come non rimanere incantati a testa insù nella grande scalinata centrale?

Within a walking distance on South direction from the Judisches Museum, you will find one yourself in the middle of the most picturesque area in Berlin, Kreuzberg: head to Bergmanstrasse, which despite being one of the city most popular streets, still preserves a typical athmosphere, and it’s full of nice vintage shops, ethnic restaurants, in a relaxed mood.

Don’t miss here the Marheineke Markthalle, a covered market where you can choose between many different foods for your lunch. Finally, have a break in the near Victoriapark: it’s the highest hill of Berlin (just 66 meters 😉 ) and a very nice green corner where locals use to spend their free time in summer!

A distanza di una camminata dal Museo Ebraico, in direzione sud, vi troverete nel bel mezzo di uno dei quartieri più pittoreschi della città, Kreuzberg: prendete come punto di riferimento per girarlo Bergmanstrasse, che nonostante sia ormai una delle più note via della città e rimasta una delle più affascinanti, ricca di negozi vintage, ristoranti etnici e con un’atmosfera davvero speciale.

Per un pranzo veloce, fermatevi al mercato coperto di Marheineke Markthalle; per una piccola pausa, invece, raggiungete il piccolo parco di Victoriapark: questa zona verde occupa la parte più alta della città (comunque bassa, una collina con altitudine di appena 60 metri!) e qui in estate la gente del posto trascorre le giornate più calde.

My Berlin tour ends in this part of the city, the Kreuzberg east, across the river Spree to finally reach the Berlin Wall (exactly, in the district of Friedrichshain).

The area close to the U-Bahn Schlesisches Tor is a gallery of street art: here all the facades are filled with graffiti, some of them by famous artists; here, you will raise your head and find a facade painted by Blu (the famous Levathian) and just ahead one by Os Gemeos, with its Yellow Man. The area is very funky, almost decadent, this is the youngest area of the city and a very characteristic one: just cross the Oberbraumbucke bridge at sunset, with the background music of some street musicians, to breath this special athmosphere 🙂

On the opposite side of the river Spree, you will find the East Side Gallery: a ymbol of war and division turned into a colorful corner of town. Here, the longest collection of outdoor murals of the world, with more than 100 paintings by 21 countries that have translated with shapes and colors the beginning of a new era for the city ❤

Il mio tour di Berlino finisce in questa parte della città, la zona est di Kreuzberg, attraversando il fiume Spree fino a raggiungere quello che è rimasto del tristemente famoso Muro di Berlino (precisamente nel quartiere di Friedrichshain).

La zona vicino alla stazione della U-Bahn di Schlesisches Tor è una vera e propria galleria di street art: qui le facciate sono tutte colorate da graffiti, alcuni dei quali fatti da famosi artisti, qui alzi la testa e ti ritrovi una facciata cieca completamente ripitturata da Blu (il famoso Levatiano) e poco più avanti da Os Gemeos, con il suo Yellow Man. Nella zona si respira un’atmosfera strana, quasi decadente, è l’area più giovane della città e davvero caratteristica: attraversare il ponte di Oberbraumbucke al tramonto, con il sottofondo di qualche musicista di strada, davvero non ha prezzo 🙂

Dalla parte opposta del fiume Spree, la East Side Gallery, ovvero l’esempio di come un simbolo di guerra e divisione possa venire trasformato in un coloratissimo angolo di città. Qui infatti si trova la più lunga collezione di murales all’aperto del mondo, con più di 100 dipinti di 21 paesi che hanno tradotto con forme e colori l’inizio di una nuova era per la città ❤

A pochi metri da qui, si trova anche l‘hotel della musica in cui ho alloggiato, ve ne ho parlato qualche tempo fa in questo post, ricordate?
