I visited Kuala Lumpur during my tour in Malaysia and Singapore I told you about here: I must confess, I didn’t like the city. But…
Kuala Lumpur is so chaotic, awfully hot, not clean in many places, I would say in certain areas just for really strong stomachs. It’s however fascinating in its strong contrasts, within one stop of underground you can step from splendor and cleanliness of huge shopping malls to much less beautiful neighborhoods. Not to mention the traffic that it’s really crazy: in Kuala Lumpur if you’re a pedestrian you risk your life every second, that is.
In some areas Kuala Lumpur reminded me of Rio de Janeiro in some suburbs areas: except that I found it much less dangerous as a city (I found Peninsular Malaysia in general absolutely not dangerous, in my experience). And that in Brazil there’s the maximum freedom of everything while Kuala Lumpur is a Muslim city and not, kisses and so in public are not really accepted, and wearing mini shorts you feel a little bit amiss. And there are no dogs around at all.
But I’m really happy I’ve been in Kuala Lumpur.
First, because I think that things must be seen with our own eyes and getting out of our small town-candies enriches our minds.
Second because it’s here, in this differentely beautiful city, that I saw the most beautiful architecture I’ve ever seen: the Petronas Towers.
A Kuala Lumpur ci siamo stati durante il nostro tour in Malesia e Singapore di cui vi avevo già parlato qui: e vi devo confessare che no, Kuala Lumpur non mi è piaciuta.
E’ una città davvero dispersiva, caotica, non pulita. In certe zone, per stomaci davvero forti. Una città dai contrasti fortissimi, nel giro di una fermata di metropolitana passi dallo splendore e la pulizia delle torri e dei centri commerciali a quartieri molto ma molto meno splendidi. Il caldo torrido rende il tutto ancora meno semplice, per non parlare del traffico: a Kuala Lumpur se sei un pedone rischi la vita ogni secondo (giuro, ho visto scattare il verde contemporaneamente nella corsia delle auto e dei pedoni, e gente ritrovarsi in mezzo a tangenziali attraversando con i bagagli e macchine che sfrecciavano intorno).
In alcuni punti mi ha ricordato Rio de Janeiro nelle sue periferie -non certo la Rio di Copabana ecco: con la differenza che l’ho trovata molto meno pericolosa come città (la Malesia peninsulare in generale non è assolutamente pericolosa. In metro esistono anche i vagoni per sole donne come avevo visto a Tokyo, non perché il resto sia poco sicuro, ma per dare unl’alternativa alle donne). E che in Brasile vige la massima libertà, mentre Kuala Lumpur è una città islamica e no le smancerie in pubblico non sono proprio accettate, e con i mini shorts addosso ti senti un tantino fuori luogo. E non ci sono cani in giro: nemmeno uno.
Però sono davvero felice di esserci stata, a Kuala Lumpur.
Intanto perché penso che le cose vadano viste con i propri occhi e ogni tanto uscire dalle nostre città-bomboniera ti arricchisce la mente, oltre a fartele apprezzare ancora di più una volta tornati.
E poi perché è proprio qui, in questa città diversamente bella, che ho incontrato l’architettura più bella che io abbia mai visto: le Petronas Towers.
Petronas Towers in a glance
Designed by Argentine architect Cesar Pelli between ’95 and ’98, the Petronas with their 452 meters are still among the most impressive engineerings in the world, and since September 11th they are the tallest twin towers in the world.
Its steel and glass facade developes from a plan generated by the Islamic geometric icon of two overlapping and rotated square, symbol of harmony, stability and rationality. The tradition is mixed with an high-tech architecture that after twenty years is still very current, whose symbol is the skybridge 171 meters high connecting the two towers.
Visiting Petronas Towers is very simple: you can buy online here the tickets for a guided tour before on the skybridge and then to the top observatory. We purchased online to avoid the long queues.
I really think the Petronas Towers are one of those things to see once in a lifetime. Especially at night, and from outside. I believe they are one of the most beautiful architectures I’ve ever seen, actually.

Le torri sono un richiamo fortissimo all’architettura della tradizione islamica: non si tratta altro che della ripetizione su tanti livelli della stessa pianta generata dallo schema geometrico islamico dei due quadrati sovrapposti e ruotati, simbolo iconografico di armonia, stabilità e razionalità.
La tradizione si mescola ad una tecnologia che dopo vent’anni è ancora attualissima, con un linguaggio architettonico high-tech il cui simbolo è lo skybridge a 171 metri di altezza che unisce le due torri.
Visitare le Petronas Towers è molto semplice, dal sito si può acquistare il biglietto per la visita guidata che ti permette di salire prima allo skybridge e poi all’osservatorio all’ultimo piano, almeno noi l’abbiamo acquistato online per evitare le code che sono piuttosto lunghe. Siamo saliti al primo turno della mattina, alle nove.
Penso che davvero le Petronas Towers siano una di quelle cose da vedere una volta nella vita. Soprattutto di notte, e da fuori. Penso davvero siano uno degli spettacoli di architettura più belli che io abbia mai visto.
the tip for the best view of Petronas Towers at night
There is a place in Kuala Lumpur which has the best view of Petronas Towers at night. It’s called Marini’s on 57: 57 th, as the level where it is located, and Marini, such as the last name of Veronese Modesto Marini, the chef who founded it. An Italian chef, recenly named as Cavaliere by the Italian government.
This place is the highest rooftop bar of Malaysia, and it is exactly next to Petronas, in the closest tower…To be precise, it is located on the Menara Petronas 3 (who knew that there are actually three Petronas?).
The restaurant is perched on top of the tower, in a stunning glazed architecture. Fully glazed walls and ceiling, in order to enjoy the view of the towers and the city at their best. The interior design is luxury yet minimal, no frills, and this is something not so common here in Malaysia I really appreciated.
However, while you enjoy your drink and eat your pizza here, it almost seems to touch the floodlit Petronas in their silver colours. Trust me, you will never forget this place

C’è un posto a Kuala Lumpur che gode di una vista unica e speciale delle torri fino a notte fonda. Si chiama Marini’s on 57: 57°, come il piano in cui si trova, e Marini, come il cognome dello chef Veronese Modesto Marini che lo ha fondato. Un italiano, di recente conferito della prestigiosa carica di Cavaliere dal nostro governo.
Questo posto è semplicemente il rooftop bar più alto della Malaysia, e si trova praticamente attaccato alle Petronas, nella torre a fianco che appunto si chiama la Petronas 3 (e chi lo sapeva che in realtà le torri fossero appunto tre?).
Il locale è arroccato in cima alla torre in un’architettura completamente di vetro che ti lascia senza fiato: soffitto e pareti completamente vetrate, per godere al massimo della vista sulle torri e sulla città. Il design degli interni è lussuoso ma comunque minimale, senza fronzoli, cosa non semplice da trovare da queste parti.
Mentre bevi il tuo drink e mangi una pizza, ti sembra praticamente di toccare le Petronas, mentre sono illuminate a giorno e brillano di una tonalità argentata. Non me lo dimenticherò mai, questo posto.
PS: when you go down, in the KLCC park (the beautiful park in front of the towers), you can still hear Marini’s music playing. Besides, this is also the only place in Malaysia to publish its own compilation, Sunset Hours Vol.1 – Vol.3, with various renowned DJs. Cool ;)
PS: se scendete giù, nel KLCC park (il bellissimo parco di fronte alle torri), potete sentire ancora la musica. Non si scherza su al Marini’s ;) D’altronde questo è anche l’unico locale della Malaysia a pubblicare una propria compilation musiacle, Sunset Hours Vol.1 – Vol.3, con vari rinomati deejay.
