Long weekend coming, and wheather forecast says it also will be a sunny one.

I have just returned from a few days in the Netherlands, for the Dutch Design Week (that was amazing: just leave me few days to recap photos and will share), and there it was much colder then here. But do you know what impressed me the most? People spend a lot of time outdoor despite the low temperature. Obviously,with a lot of cycling, but also thanks to many area that are equipped to enjoy time outdoor not just in summertime. Here in Italy the common way of living is spend time in the garden just in summer, and as soon as the temperature drops a little bit down we dress up with a thousand of layers and leave home only to attend to the daily chores. And our garden is death.

My feeling is that we are really missing many beautiful things, with this habit of the garden as just a summer thing. At least five: for this weekend, my aim of putting them into practice!

Weekend lungo alle porte, e a quanto pare qui sarà anche un ponte festivo di sole.

Io sono appena tornata da qualche giorno in Olanda (in occasione della Dutch Design Week, fantastica, datemi solo il tempo di rimettere ordine tra le mille foto e ve ne parlerò), dove faceva decisamente più freddo. Sapete cosa mi ha colpito di più? Notare quanto tempo trascorre la gente all’aria aperta. Ovviamente sia girando moltissimo in bicicletta, ma anche grazie a tanti spazi attrezzati per stare fuori all’aria aperta non solo d’estate. Qui in Italia invece la mentalità comune è quella di stare in giardino solo d’estate, e appena la temperatura scende di qualche grado ci vestiamo dei nostri mille strati e usciamo solo per sbrigare le faccende quotidiane. Il giardino resta un angolo morto, da riesumare solo in aprile. 

E invece mi sa che ci perdiamo tante cose belle, relegando il giardino a cosa puramente estiva. Ne ho trovate cinque: e per questo ponte l’obiettivo è di metterle in pratica!

Once I even didn’t notice them. Now, however, I love the colors of autumn, all those warm hues ranging from orange to browns typical of this season. I appreciate them because I know that soon there are disappearing, winter is coming!

Una volta non li notavo proprio. Adesso invece mi piacciono: sono i colori dell’autunno, ovvero tutte quelle tonalità calde che vanno dall’arancio al marrone tipiche di questa stagione. Le apprezzo perché so che tra poco non ci saranno più!

Let’s play with colours and natural elements to decorate also in the outside: leaves of many different colors, pumpkins, chestnuts, to make immediately the less cold environment. Try it both outdoor and indoor!

Giocare con i colori dell’autunno e con gli elementi naturali per decorare anche l’esterno: foglie di tanti colori, zucche, castagne, per rendere subito l’ambiente meno freddo. Da provare anche in casa!

Days are shorter, and we can not do anything against this. Let’s try finding the bright side with some beautiful lamps and lanterns for the outdoor!

Le giornate sono più corte, proprio questo weekend cambia l’ora, e non ci si può fare nulla. Cerchiamo il lato positivo trovando delle belle luci e lanterne da esterno!

One thing I always notice when I travel in Nordic countries, this time in the Netherlands but also recently in Finland, is that they use a lot of blankets also in the outside. Also, many pillows and fur seating coverings. For us, in italy, blankets & co are just for the indoor, but why not using them to add warmth also outdoor?

Una cosa che noto sempre quando vado nei paesi nordici, stavolta in Olanda ma anche poco tempo fa in Finlandia, è che utilizzano moltissimo le coperte anche all’esterno. Te le danno negli spazi pubblici, quando sei seduto fuori al bar in giornate di sole. Non solo: anche tanti cuscini e coprischienale, magari in pelliccia. Per noi coperte&co sono sinonimo di interno, ma invece sono un modo molto bello per aggiungere calore anche fuori casa!

Strive to make the most of the outdoor spaces. With a lovely outdoor stove, like the Dutch do, or let’s consider closing some parts of the garden by creating real outdoor rooms!

Ingegnarsi per sfruttare al massimo gli spazi esterni. Con una bella stufa esterna, come fanno gli Olandesi, o perché no considerando di chiudere alcune parti del giardino  creando delle vere e proprie stanze all’aperto!
