DUTCH DESIGN WEEK 2016 | My top 5

Last week I visited for the first time the Dutch Design Week. The event does not take place in Amsterdam, as you might think, but in the smaller city of Eindhoven: not a very touristic place, a fascinating city with a very strong industrial mood, town of the Philips industries.

I spent three really inspiring days: among 2500 designers and over 400 events scattered around the city, in a nice city center where it’s very easy to get around (even easier with free taxis!) , a cool atmosphere that I would like you to share today in the blog pages. Will include for sure Dutch Design Week in my design must-sees!

Here we go with my 5 favorite locations… but more is coming soon on the blog (from the Design Academy, for example)!

::

Experimentation is the key to innovation: the Ducth collaborative is back after the Milan Design Week 2016 with Envisions Products in Process Part 2, with such a beautiful setting that it would deserve a post itself. A huge moodboard of materials and colors where the designers intended to show the production process of their works.

2 > piet hein eek

[symple_divider style=”dashed” margin_top=”20″ margin_bottom=”20″]

Piet Hein Eek HQ is a beautiful Dutch village in exposed bricks, absolutely a must-see. During Dutch Design Week part of the factory was open to the public and, in addition to a wide showroom of furniture and accessories by Piet Hein Eek, there was an interesting exhibit of selected young Dutch talent. Loved!

Bello!

3 > van abbemuseum

[symple_divider style=”dashed” margin_top=”20″ margin_bottom=”20″]

Van Abbemuseum is a must-see in Eindhoven, as well as one of the most important European museums of contemporary art. I really enjoyed, beyond space itself, the Dutch Design Week exhibition curated by the Design Academy diplomats around the topic of design and color.

4 > strijp-s

[symple_divider style=”dashed” margin_top=”20″ margin_bottom=”20″]

This area is so amazing that is worth a visit in any case, beyond the DDW installations and design exhibits. It is also the most famous area of the Dutch Design Week, where you can find a little bit of everything from the press room to the big brands. I must tell you that I loved more the area in itself, with its post-industrial charm, that the exhibitions itself: here you can find for example the Plug-In City, an experimental concept of sustainable and creative city, a real “city within the city“.

5 > kazerne

[symple_divider style=”dashed” margin_top=”20″ margin_bottom=”20″]

Kazerne is a beautiful cultural center which combines design and food, with an amazing restaurant, many showrooms and exhibit spaces. During the Dutch Design Week 2016 there were many interesting exhibits here: Dutch Design Foundation x Kickstarter, the interesting New Material Award 2016, and some rooms dedicated to design news by selected Dutch brands.
