INTERIOR TIPS | Choosing the perfect Kitchen Backsplash Tiles

In the last months, I designed several kitchens, both for new projects and for renovations. In any case, I have noticed that one of the most difficult things to choose is the right finish for the backsplash.

For this reason, for the first interior guide of the year, I I am sharing some tips with you. In particular, let’s take a closer look at the most practical and traditional solution, that is, the kitchen backsplash tiles covering.

Negli ultimi mesi mi sono trovata a progettare varie cucine, sia per nuove realizzazioni che per ristrutturazioni. In ogni caso, ho notato che una delle variabili più difficili da scegliere è la finitura della parete paraschizzi.

Per questo, per la prima guida pratica dell’anno, ho pensato di appuntarmi e condividere con te alcuni consigli su come sceglierla. Tra le moltissime alternative approfondiamo oggi la più pratica e tradizionale, ovvero il rivestimento paraschizzi in piastrelle.

First of all, it is crucial to look at the kitchen as a whole, rather than dwelling on the individual finishes, as well as to start with an idea of the final style you would like to achieve. Very helpful in this, having examples of kitchen designs you like, to find inspiration and get a clearer idea when choosing, but also to be able to tell your designer about your tastes. Pinterest, Houzz and interior blogs (like this one!) are key tools at this stage.

For example, do you want a minimalist design kitchen? Are you looking for a surprising detail and a very original design? Do you love the eclectic style? Are you afraid of getting tired with time?

Innanzitutto, è fondamentale guardare la cucina nell’insieme, piuttosto che soffermarsi sulle singole finiture, nonché farsi prima un’idea dello stile finale che vorresti ottenere. In questo, è essenziale avere dei riferimenti di cucine realizzate, per trovare ispirazione e farsi un’idea più chiara al momento della scelta, ma anche per poterla comunicare a chi ti seguirà nella progettazione. 2. Choosing the perfect Kitchen Backsplash tile #height

One detail that usually people don’t think about is the backsplash covering height. Of course, it depends on the kitchen design, but if you opt for an open kitchen (did you know that kitchens without upper cabinets are really on-trend today?) the height of the tiling can really change the final result. You can go for a low band, or for a higher one, or finally for a full-height covering. It all depends on the result you want to achieve and from the finish that you choose.

Un dettaglio che in genere molti non prendono in considerazione è l’altezza del rivestimento paraschizzi. Chiaramente dipende dalla tipologia di cucina, ma nel caso in cui non abbiate dei pensili (tra l’altro, quella delle cucine aperte sulla parte alta è una delle tendenze più attuali oggi) l’altezza del rivestimento può cambiare in maniera sostanziale il risultato estetico finale. Si può optare per una semplice alzatina, o per uan fascia orizzontale, o infine per un rivestimento a tutt’altezza. Tutto dipende dal risultato che volete ottenere e dalla finitura che andate a scegliere.

3. Choosing the perfect Kitchen Backsplash tile #color

The color is obviously one of the main decisions, which is not that easy at all because it must be coordinated with a number of elements. First of all, you have to select your backsplash finish together with the kitchen furniture, as well as with the countertop: you can opt for a solution to go in continuity with it, but also by working in contrast with it. Another crucial detail is to check the match of backsplash tiles with the flooring, especially if it is a tiled floor: an option could be to choose the same identical type of tile for both, to create a spatial continuity, or to choose a different format with a similar finish.

Il colore è ovviamente una delle classiche decisioni da prendere, che tuttavia non risulta affatto facile perché va coordinata con una serie di elementi. Innanzitutto con i mobili della cucina, nonché con il top, con il quale il paraschizzi può essere studiato in continuità o a contrasto. Importante anche coordinare l’abbinamento con il pavimento, soprattutto se si tratta di un pavimento in piastrelle: un’opzione potrebbe essere quella di optare per lo stesso identico tipo, creando continuità spaziale, oppure per un formato diverso di quello posato a terra.

4. Choosing the perfect Kitchen Backsplash tile #finish

Same considerations apply for the finishes choice. Thanks to the great variety of tile effects you can find now in store (wood, marble, stone, just to name a few), tiles are still the most used solution for covering the kitchen backsplash wall. That’s because, by being that wall the area easier to get soiled, tiles are the easiest and faster material to clean, as well as the more lasting one.

Quanto detto per il colore riguarda ovviamente anche la finitura della piastrella. Grazie alla grande varietà di effetti in commercio (legno, marmo, pietra, solo per citarne alcuni), la piastrella resta la soluzione oggi più valida per rivestire la parete paraschizzi. Essendo la zona più esposta allo sporco della cucina, è anche quella che necessita di un materiale facile e veloce da pulire: i rivestimenti ceramici sono imbattibili in questo senso.
