The Pink Dog goes to London Design Festival: design trends and previews from Tent London 2015

You heard me right, I’m leaving for a few days to be spent in the English capital for the London Design Festival 2015.

The event takes place from the 19th to the 27th of September for a week full of design and design-related events. Even if you know that for me every opportunity to get back to London is a good oppotunity, I love so much this city where I lived for a while 😉

It’s my first time at this London event, so now it’s time for maps and press releases, there really seems to be plenty of choice of interesting exhibitions and events!

Si avete letto bene, sono nel pieno dei preparativi per trascorrere qualche giorno nella capitale inglese.

L’occasione è quella del London Design Festival, evento che anima Londra per una settimana all’insegna del design, dal 19 al 27 settembre. Anche se lo sapete che per me ogni occasione è buona per tornare a Londra, tanto mi piace questa città, e sono sicura che chi ci ha vissuto per un periodo capisce cosa intendo quando parlo di amore verso questa città e di costante nostalgia.

E’ la mia prima volta a questo evento londinese e quindi ora via di mappe e di comunicati stampa, sembra che ci sia davvero l’imbarazzo della scelta!

As a start, there are seven different design districts, that’s to say some areas with a high concentration of design showrooms, workshops and studios, within a walking distance.

For Bankside this year is the first one as a London Design Festival Design District: I think this area, located south of the river Thames, is one of the most charming areas, and will not miss it.

Tanto per cominciare, i distretti del design – ovvero le aree ad alta concentrazione di studi, attività di design e negozi, visitabili a piedi, un pò come le zone del Fuorisalone – sono sette.

La novità di quest’anno è il Bankside Design District, tra l’altro a mio avviso una delle zone più affascinanti di Londra, quella che corre a sud del Tamigi praticamente a partire dalla tate Modern.

Also, many large group-shows are taking place across the city whith new and established exhibitors from the UK and around the world are debuting their designs previews. ‘Design Destinations’ are excellent platforms for new and emerging designers and makers to present their products and innovations.

I’ve to making a select on these, will be for sure at TentLondon&Superbrands, probably at designjunction, and hopefully at 100%design…

Ci sono poi le ‘Design Destinations‘, ovvero dei fulcri espositivi di design in cui brand affermati e nuovi espongono le proprie novità e i prodotti di lancio, così come le nuove collezioni.

Va fatta per forza una selezione, e di sicuro visiterò TentLondon&Superbrands, spero inoltre designjunction, e forse 100%design…?

I read an interesting design trends 2015 focus from Tent London and want to share something with you, actually I’ve selected 3 of them…let’s see in a few days if this will be confirmed!

Proprio da Tent London arriva un interessante report sui trend di design del 2015 che volevo condividere qui con voi, dal quale io ho scelto le tre tendenze che a mio avviso sono più attuali quest’anno…voi che ne pensate?

key trends for 2015 | colour block

Playing a key visual element in design, colour remains a defining factor in communicating an idea, emphasising shape and for creating a mood, whether that be in a product or environment. This year, one of the key trends is the introduction of lines and patterns created using blocks of colour, to create depth and a layering effect.

Making its first appearance at London Design Festival, Dulux, champions of colour and design in the paint and interiors industry, launches ‘Colour Futures 2016’ at Tent London this September. Dulux will reveal it’s 2016 Colour of the Year and key colour and design trends for the year ahead: so curious about this!!

Al centro di Tent London e non solo – anche di 100% design, che quest’anno sarà proprio dedicata al “Design in Colour“- , il colore sembra ancora essere protagonista delle creazioni dei designer emergenti. Colore utilizzato come “color block”, ovvero in simbiosi con geometrie, linee e texture, a creare pattern coloratissimi.

A Tent London Dulux lancerà i ‘Colour Futures 2016’, rivelando i colori chiave e i trend per il prossimo anno…quanta curiosità mi stanno mettendo!

key trends for 2015 | surfaces & circles

This was a strong trend for the latest Salone del Mobile 2015 and seems to be trending in London as well, however this is my feeling while snooping among the Tent London 2015 previews. This trend is inspired by “cosmic” shapes and textures and goes further, by exploring new material reactions.

Experimenting with textures and surface reactions, as for example the prints created from ground charcoal and silt found in the East River, New York and River Thames by USA based Whitebeam Studio and experimental ‘Pat vol 1’ pieces by KNEIP from Norway.

Gia dal Salone del Mobile 2015, avrete notato che sono apparse un po’ ovunque superfici lunari, e richiami ad un trend che si potrebbe definire “cosmico”, ispirato proprio alle forme e alle texture dello spazio.

Curiosando tra le anteprime di Tent London mi sembra che questa tendenza si sia affermata anche qui, con una ricerca sperimentale verso nuove reazioni del colore sui materiali, e forme circolari. Non mi dispiace affatto!

key trends for 2015 | material manipulation

Material manipulation refers to a number of exhibitors experimenting with new techniques and maybe this is the most interesting trend I think.

Materials include for example the recycled fabric to create unique porcelain vessels by Sisal Studio, Finnish brand Amfora with its vases, the wall coverings created with folding paper by Tracy Tubb, and several other samples, as Australian design studio Queenso’s experimenting with outdoor seating through a range of stools with real hay filling, or the sculptural forged bronze lighting pieces by James Price.

Il trend definito “material manipulation”si riferisce a tanti espositori che sperimentano nuove tecniche di trasformazione dei materiali, e mi sembra anche il più interessante dei tre.

Ci sono ad esempio le ceramiche di studio Sisal, create con tessuto riciclato. Oppure il brand finlandese Amfora con i suoi vasi. Le carte da parati in carta stropicciata di Tracy Tubb. Ma anche le lampade scultoree in bronzo di James Price e gli arredi da esterni dello studio australiano Queenso’s, fatti di…fieno!
