While I’m in Sweden to visit the Stockholm Design Week, let’s go together today in a new stop of our virtual travel in the kitchen design across different countries. This stop is about Scandinavian kitchen design and I’m sure you will love it.
Why we all love Scandinavian style?
The key to the success of this interior style is in the cozy and intimate atmospheres of Scandinavian homes. That’s then reflected also in the Scandinavian kitchen designs.
This mood is the result of a lifestyle, perfectly explained by the Danish word hygge and the Swedish word lagom. It’s all about enjoying the little things, getting rid of the useless things, spending qualitative time at home. We all actually would like to fill our lives with hygge and lagom (but actually very few of us really able of doing this, let’s face reality).
The house in Scandinavia has a key role in this lifestyle and this has clearly a geographical explanation. Indeed, for Scandinavians, the house is the place where they can spend the long dark days of winter. Daylight is reduced to the minimum, then making home welcoming becomes very important to find warmth in dark days. Same goes for office spaces, of course.
Actually, the Scandinavian way of living is quite far from our Mediterranean culture. Probably, this is the reason that makes it so fascinating in our eyes.
One thing for sure is, the Scandinavian style- also called New Nordic– is now the most popular interior style, widespread also here in Italy. Probably because we all would like to live like them, but with our daylight and our days at the beach, though😉

Mentre mi trovo in Svezia in occasione della Stockholm Design Week, vi porto virtualmente con me in Scandinavia per un’altra tappa del nostro viaggio nel mondo attraverso le cucine di casa. Oggi parliamo del design nelle cucine Scandinave e sono sicura che questa sarà la vostra tappa preferita. C’è infatti qualcosa di speciale nelle case Scandinave che le rende davvero affascinanti ai nostri occhi (almeno, di sicuro ai miei). In cucina, come nel resto.
Ma: perché tutti amano lo stile Scandinavo?
E’ proprio l’atmosfera accogliente e intima che caratterizza le case scandinave la chiave del successo di questo stile di interni.
Uno stile di arredo che è conseguenza di un vero e proprio stile di vita, racchiuso nei termini hygge in Danese, o lagom in Svedese. Si tratta di apprezzare le piccole cose, di liberarsi del superfluo, di trascorrere bene il tempo insieme. Uno stile di vita che un po’ tutti vorremo fare nostro (ma in realtà pochi di noi ci riescono per davvero, diciamolo).
La casa ha un ruolo fondamentale in tutto ciò e tutto questo ha una chiara origine culturale: per gli Scandinavi infatti la casa è il luogo in cui trascorrere le lunghe giornate buie dell’inverno. Le ora di luce sono ridotte al minimo e la casa diventa perciò fulcro delle giornate, da rendere accogliente per passare comunque piacevolmente il tempo. Lo stesso vale anche per gli spazi di lavoro, comunque.
Il concetto Scandinavo di casa è qualcosa in realtà di molto lontano rispetto alla nostra cultura Mediterranea. Proprio per questo probabilmente ci affascina così tanto.
Lo stile Scandinavo, definito anche New Nordic, ormai si è ampiamente diffuso anche in Italia proprio perché un po’ tutti vorremo essere come loro. Con le nostre ore di luce e le nostre giornate al mare, però 😉

1. Use of Wood and Natural elements | Scandinavian kitchen design

Come nel design, anche in cucina gli Scandinavi amano incorporare materiali naturali.
Primo tra tutti il legno locale. L’ispirazione stessa spesso deriva dalla natura, nella scelta dei materiali, nelle palette cromatiche, senza sfociare mai in dettagli decorativi inutili.

2. Minimalist display| Scandinavian kitchen design
Form follows function in Scandinavian design.
Open shelves are particularly common in Scandinavian kitchens, because they are practical and allow you to easily store and display items. Same for the kitchen hood, that is often a key element in the kitchen design.

La forma segue sempre la funzione nel design Scandinavo.
Allo stesso modo, nelle cucine Scandinave è molto frequente trovare scaffalature a vista. Questo perché permettono di organizzare gli oggetti tenendoli tutti a vista e pronti per l’uso in cucina. Allo stesso modo, anche le cappe spesso sono valorizzate e lasciate a vista.

3. Cozy minimalism | Scandinavian kitchen design
Same as in other rooms, Scandinavian kitchens are minimalist without being cold and uncomfortable.
There are few elements but well places, matching different materials, which can decorate the space without the need of adding decoration.

4. More than total white | Scandinavian kitchen design
Actually, Scandinavian design is not just about total white. In the Scandinavian kitchens it’s very common to find small bursts of vibrant colors, as well as beautiful solutions in muted and pastel colors.
Nonostante quello che comunemente si crede, lo stile Scandinavi è molto di più del total white. Gli Scandinavi amano utilizzare il colore negli interni e le cucine sono spesso le stanze più colorate della casa, con accenti i colori vivaci oppure interessanti soluzioni in tonalità tenui e pastello.

5. Dark but bright? | Scandinavian kitchen design
Lately, the color research in Scandinavian homes and kitchens moved into dark shades. The whole effect, however, is never too cold or too dark, because dark shades are matched with very warm materials such as wood and rattan.
Ultimamente, la ricerca nell’ambito del colore nelle case e nelle cucine Scandinave si è spinta molto anche verso tonalità scure. L’effetto tuttavia non è mai freddo né buio, perché alle tonalità scure vengono accostati materiali particolarmente caldi come ad esempio il legno e il rattan.

6. Old together with new | Scandinavian kitchen design
Scandinavians mix elements from different ages in a perfect balance, and this is one thign I truly love about them. The old gets value with the new, and vice-versa. In the kitchen this is often very clear, with vintage kitchens that however are very functional and technological.
L’abilità di mixare elementi di epoche diverse in un insieme esteticamente piacevole è un’altra delle caratteristiche degli Scandinavi che amo. Il vecchio assume fascino grazie al nuovo, e viceversa. In cucina questo aspetto è spesso particolarmente visibile, con cucine vintage tuttavia molto attuali e funzionali.
