Italian Style Kitchen, how to get the style (without stereotypes)

If you are dreaming of an Italian Style kitchen for your home, this is the post for you

As an Italian, wokring also as interior designer in Italy, I’m sharing some tips and examples today about this. But first a note: it is really difficult to define an “Italian” style, because home interiors here are as varied as Italy itself.

There is indeed a strong regional influence in the design of interiors, in people’s tastes, in what is more or less trendy and it is therefore almost impossible to define a univocal style. I also realized that there are a lot of stereotypes in people’s minds when thinking about Italian homes and probably what we actually have at home is far from what you expect. No, we are not spending hours in big kitchens in rustic style, between marbles and bright colors (luckily). I’d say that my generation is absolutely into a contemporary and sleek style, that is actually the most interesting now in Italy and is what usually my clients ask when designing their new homes.

We can list common features that home will be inspiring for those of you who are looking to add a touch of “Italian style” in their kitchens. Enjoy !

E’ davvero difficile definire uno stile “italiano”, perché nello stile d’interni l’Italia è tanto eterogenea almeno quando lo è la sua geografia. C’è infatti una forte influenza regionale nella progettazione di interni, nei gusti delle persone, in ciò che è più o meno diffuso ed è quindi quasi impossibile definire uno stile univoco. Mi rendo poi sempre più conto che ci sono tanti stereotipi all’estero sull’ essere italiani, su come siano le case italiane, come se tutti vivessimo in case con grandi cucine in stile rustico, tra marmi e colori sgargianti. Per fortuna non è così, anzi, piuttosto tra le nuove generazioni è proprio il contrario.

E’ possibile comunque definire dei tratti comuni che possono essere d’ispirazione a chi, dall’estero, desideri progettare una cucina simile a quella delle nostre case. Vediamoli insieme – e fatemi sapere se la vostra cucina è così!

Colours / Italian Style Kitchen

Italian style kitchens in people’s mind are colorful.

The truth is that in many cases they are not: the common trend is to opt for furnishings in neutral shades, to last over time, because kitchens are there to last at least some decades. It is true, however, that often we add a pop of color, maybe with just one element as it could be a kitchen appliance or a colourful tiled backsplash.

Le cucine italiane nell’immaginario comune sono colorate.

La verità è che in molti casi non lo sono: la tendenza comune è quella di optare per arredi in tonalità neutre e che non stanchino nel tempo, soprattutto nell’ambiente della casa progettato per durare più a lungo ovvero la cucina. E’ vero però che spesso si aggiunge una nota di colore in cucina, magari con un solo elemento/elettrodomestico.

Shapes / Italian Style Kitchen

As I told before, it is very difficult to define common lines in the design of Italian kitchens, because there are so many different styles here.

There are those people who prefer a more rustic style, somebody are more into vintage, but – at least according to my experience as an interior designer working in Italy- most clients opt for kitchens with a contemporary and minimal design. That is, sleek kitchens which must also be functional and easy to clean, with few frills and lots of space both for cooking and food storage.

Come vi dicevo nell’introduzione, è molto difficile definire delle linee comuni per quanto riguarda il design delle cucine italiane, questo perché ci sono moltissimi stili differenti.

C’è chi preferisce uno stile più rustico, chi più vintage, ma almeno stando alla mia esperienza di progettista la maggior parte alla fine opta per cucine dal design contemporaneo e minimale. Ovvero, cucine che siano funzionali, ma anche veloci da pulire, con pochi fronzoli e con tanto spazio sia per la preparazione del cibo (quindi piani ampi) che come dispensa.

Materials / Italian Style Kitchen

Italian kitchen designs are always considered as the best ones in quality of materials, that is true because we have a long tradition in craftmanship.

We also put a lot of attention towards finishes: not just about how materials look, but how they feel to the touch. Clients often prefer putting some more budget into a good material than by adding some useless decor element, as material itself with its texture can become itself a decorating element of the kitchen.

Uno stereotipo positivo, e in molti casi vero, è quello che le cucine italiane sono fatte con materiali di qualità.

Inoltre prestiamo molta attenzione alle finiture: non solo a come appaiono esteticamente i materiali, ma anche a come si sentono al tatto, all’aspetto più materico delle cose. Vedo che i clienti preferiscono spendere qualcosa in più in un materiale di qualità, piuttosto che in qualche elemento decorativo inutile. Il pattern di una finitura può diventare essa stessa un elemento decorativo della cucina.
