Here at ITALIANBARK® we offer interior design services both for Italian clients and for people outside Italy, also thanks to the online interior design services we are giving for almost ten years now.
Since we are an Italian interior design studio, I am often asked for advice from foreign readers, which are Italian style interiors lovers. Maybe they live outside Italy and they purchased a vacation home in some nice place here in Italy, maybe they are launching an hotel or Air BnB here in Italy – or maybe, also, they are going to renovate home somewhere outside Italy, but would like to be inspired by our style.
But the question is – What is Italian interior style?
In this article, I made a list of 10 top features that may identify Italian interior style. The list is definitely not completed and I am going to add soon more insights for you.
In the meantime, if you need an interior design, don’t hesitate to contact me by writing an e-mail at studio@italianbark.com. Look forward to meet you!

1 Rustic touch | Italian style interiors
When you think about Italian interiors, you will probably have in mind images of rustic and warm homes in Tuscan style. That is just one of the options our beautiful aesthetic offers – but probably the most popular.

2 Cement tiles | Italian style interiors
A heritage of the late Nineteenth century architecture and the Italian Liberty style, cement tiles here are simply called “cementine”. They had a really big moment a couple of years ago as a trend, but are still a relevant feature, because of their historical meaning in our home architecture.
You can see some other beautiful tiles in this projects and also read here about my visit to one of the leading tiles company here in Italy.

3 Terrazzo flooring | Italian style interiors
Became very popular at present, terrazzo flooring was the typical marble flooring of Venetian houses of the ‘500. I already predicted this trend back in 2016 and also wrote about the fascinating history of this material in this article.

4 Decor in the bathroom | Italian style interiors
Bathroom design is very relevant in our country – we can say that it’s definitely as important as other rooms in our homes. It must be cosy and comfortable, a space filled with decoration and imagination – or, instead, very modern and clean, perhaps covered with resin or large format tiles.
For some original ideas, you can find here a colorful new material for the bathroom or here some ideas in black and white. We also recently published an eBook all about bathroom decor and style trends here.

5 Terracotta and warm Colour | Italian style interiors
Not exactly invented in Italy (but with far more ancient origins), the terracotta tradition has historical roots in Tuscany and is typically an Italian one (just think of the name, of course). Although neutrals and white/black remain the favorite colour matches in contemporary Italian homes, the Italian decor style is not afraid of using color, even in warm terracotta tones.
If you like warm colors, we have plenty of color inspirations from you: from the beautiful caramel, to the rich orange ochre, to the soft antique white, just to mention a few.

6 Mix & Match | Italian style interiors
Many Italian homes are the result of restoration of ancient buildings, of postwar homes, of old farmhouses (see here for some restorations projects), and there’s an increasing appreciation towards the old even more if matched with the new.

7 Declutter | Italian style interiors
Less is more is the motto of contemporary Italian houses , that means – decorating with few essential furniture elements with quality, or maybe with an history behind. That is also the philosophy of the New Minimalist interior style, that we explored in detail some time ago on the blog.

8 Open space | Italian style interiors
As a consequence of smaller home spaces, contemporary Italian houses are characterized by an open kitchen which is integrated to the sitting room, in a unique space defined living which is the core of the house. A light and airy space, where light and glazed windows play a key role.
In this article, I listed some useful tips on how to design an open space, by sharing one of my interior projects.
