If there is one thing I understand about this work, it that you have to be ready to change often  schedule and plans. I had visited the Maison et Objet fair in Paris in September to publish an update of the N/T eBook and then I was overwhelmed by a series of (good) news and projects…and the book stayed in draft.

However, I think it is not too late to share something about this, because the Paris fair in September is filled with great inspirations and news for winter and Christmas time. Also, in my opinion, the French are the best in terms of interior decoration and what’s better than this time of the year for decorating home a little bit more, to make it cozier for Christmas time and for the days getting shorter and colder?

Se c’è una cosa che ho capito di questo lavoro è che spesso fare pianificazioni è inutile. Avevo visitato la fiera di Parigi Maison et Objet a Settembre per pubblicare un aggiornamento dell’eBook N/T e sono stata sopraffatta da una serie di (belle) novità e progetti che mi hanno impedito di terminarlo. E il book è rimasto in bozza.

Non mi sembra troppo tardi però per condividere comunque qualcosa di questo materiale, anche perché è proprio a Parigi a Settembre che vengono presentate le novità e gli allestimenti per l’inverno e per il Natale. I francesi restano secondo me i migliori in tema di decorazione d’interni e niente è più adatto di questo periodo dell’anno per fare qualche piccolo restyling in vista del Natale…perché anche se come me non siete fanatici di decorazione e di riempire la casa con cento cose, vi sfido a resistere dal decorare un po’ la casa in questo periodo dell’anno.

Decorate with: Dried flowers and branches

We have already seen this decorating trend before and in Paris actually it was everywhere. Decorating with dry flowers and branches is a soft and refined way for decorating, perfect with the current aesthetic made of raw materials, textures and warm tones, which indeed do not match so well with natural greens. However my home is still filled with green plants because – sorry if I say this-  decorating only with branches and dry grass in my opinion is a little bit boring and I prefer the proposals that mix both.

For sure, this Christmas for your centerpiece go for some pampas grass and some ears of corn and you won’t be wrong! If you want to try something with big effect you can also hang some branches on the ceiling ( I will not do try because no doubt it would fall on the guests!!)

E’ già da un po’ che la vediamo, ma a Parigi la tendenza di decorare con fiori e rami secchi si è definitivamente delineata con forza. E in realtà altro non è che una risposta all’estetica più attuale oggi, fatta di materiali imperfetti, di texture e di tonalità calde, con cui se ci pensate non si sposano benissimo le piante verdi. Che io comunque continuo a tenere in casa, perché decorare solo con rami ed erba secca in fondo mi mette un po’ di tristezza (ecco, l’ho detto). Preferisco molto di più le proposte che mixano entrambe le cose.

Certo è che se proprio volete cimentarvi in un centrotavola di Natale, con la cortaderia e le spighe di grano di sicuro non sbagliate. Se siete davvero intrepidi, potete anche appendere la vostra composizione al soffitto (cosa che io di sicuro non farò perché senza dubbio cadrebbe tutto sugli ospiti..!)

Decorate with: New objects and Shapes

After some years when it was all about decorating with geometric shapes, looks that now all brands are exploring new shapes including very organic ones. Did you notice that many design brands for example are proposing objects with animal shapes or anthropomorphic ones? I am thinking for example to Vitra, that launched a nice collection of decorative animals by studio Front called Resting Animals, to bring a touch of nature into the home together with a sense of peace.

In Paris I spotted several interesting new decorative objects, ranging from mirrors in many interesting new shapes and finishes, to new decorative elements made of terracotta or bended wood.

Dopo gli ultimi anni in cui vedevamo soprattutto decorazioni geometriche, sembra che ora la tendenza sia quella di esplorare nuove forme, comprese forme molto organiche. Hai notato che molti marchi di design, ad esempio, propongono oggetti con forme animali o antropomorfe? Penso ad esempio a Vitra, che ha lanciato una bella collezione di animali decorativi disegnati da studio Front chiamata Resting Animals, ma anche a molti altri marchi.

A Parigi ho notato diversi interessanti nuovi oggetti decorativi, che vanno dagli specchi in moltissime nuove forme e finiture interessanti, ai nuovi elementi decorativi in terracotta o legno piegato.

Decorate with: Ochre, Terracotta and Rust

I have to say that in Paris I did not notice so many big news regarding color for interiors. Above all, warm tones are confirmed, such as terracotta, ocher yellow and rust, along with burgundy red which is certainly not a new color hue. All the warm neutral tones such as beige and almond are also very up-to-date, to be combined for a total look in neutrals.

As for the coldest shades, I saw interesting shades of denim blue and indigo, as well as olive green and dark turquoise.

C’è da dire che a Parigi non ho notato grandi novità sul tema colore. Si confermano con forza soprattutto le tonalità calde, come il terracotta, il giallo ocra e il ruggine, assieme al rosso burgundy che non è di certo una novità. Molto attuali anche tutti i toni neutri caldi come il beige e il mandorla, da combinare per un total look a tinte neutre.

Per quanto riguarda le tonalità più fredde, ho visto interessanti sfumature di blu denim e indaco, nonché di verde oliva e turchese scuro.

Decorate with: Wallpapers and hanged Carpets

Wallpaper (in French, papier peinte) is one of those things that came back strongly in the last year, which until a short time ago no one would choose for his home because it reminded us of something “old”. On the other hand, decorating with wallpaper is one of today’s most up-to-date trends, because thanks to the paper it is possible to recreate any effect and textures on walls.

Rugs and textiles now go vertical and looks like this is coming into our homes too. Remember the Google Sofwear exhibit by Lidewij Edelkoort in Milan Design Week? It was all about hanged rugs and very soft objects (including tech objects), as a way to make our homes cozier and welcoming.

La carta da parati (in francese, papier peinte) è una di quelle cose tornate con forza nell’ultimo anno, che fino non molto tempo fa nessuno si sarebbe messo in casa perché ci ricordava qualcosa di “vecchio”. Invece, decorare con la carta da parati è proprio una delle tendenze più attuali oggi anche perché grazie alla carta è possibile ricreare qualsiasi effetto e texture. 

Non solo, a Parigi ho notato moltissimi allestimenti decorati con tappeti appesi alle pareti e non ho dubbi che nel tempo la tendenza arriverà anche nelle nostre case. Ricordate ad esempio l’installazione Google Sofwear di Lidewij Edelkoort alla Milan Design Week? Era proprio interamente fatta da decorazioni tessili appese alle pareti e oggetti soft, compresi gadget tecnologici rivestiti in tessuto.

Decorate with: Fur, Corduroy and Patchwork

Talking about how to decorate for winter with fabrics, for sure we have to learn from French and from Scandinavians. If you are wondering which are the trendiest fabrics now, velvet for sure is a material that continues to be on the rise, even in more patterned textures such as the corduroy which is very trendy this season in fashion too.

Fur (faux fur, absolutely!!) is another fabric that is perfect in the winter season, especially if combined with mud cloth and other African style cottons, but also with lighter fabrics such as linens and embossed cotton. Patchwork is another pattern that is coming back in this season and works quite well if combined with other fabrics, for a beautiful mix of different patterns.

A proposito di decorare la casa per l’inverno con i tessuti, di sicuro abbiamo molto da imparare dai Francesi e dagli Scandinavi. Se ti stai chiedendo quali sono i tessuti più attuali oggi, il velluto è sicuramente ancora in voga, soprattutto nelle trame più pesanti come ad esempio il velluto a coste , tendenza super attuale quest’inverno anche nel campo della moda.

La pelliccia (ovviamente finta!!) è un altro tessuto che è perfetto nella stagione invernale, soprattutto se abbinato a tessuti con stampe etniche, specialmente africane. Infine, anche il patchwork è tornato di moda (incredibile ma vero), e a piccole dosi funziona bene se mixato secondo me con tessuti e pattern differenti.

Decorate with: Eastern influences

Finally, the oriental influence in decor continues, starting from the wabi sabi trend with which we started the year in the blog and which is strongly on trend this winter too, and that’s actually the starting point of all those raw and imperfect shapes, finishes and surfaces we are seeing today everywhere. I will never get tired of these, anyway 😉

Continua infine l’influenza orientale nel decor, a cominciare dal trend wabi sabi con cui abbiamo iniziato l’anno nel blog e che si ripropone con forza anche questo inverno, punto d’inizio poi di tutto il mega trend che ruota intorno a superfici e materiali imperfetti e “raw”.  Che credo non mi stancheranno mai, comunque 😉
