DESIGN HOTELS| Ever sleeped in a theatre?

Back in time today to show you an amazing hotel design. Actually I can say this is one of the most original places I had the chance to stay in!

The incredible story of Hotel Teatro – located in the centre of Porto and now part of the DesignHotels collection – starts back in the 1859, when the the Baquet Theatre was inaugurated. Indeed, 151 years later, the theatre has been transformed into a refined hotel with a bohemian style, evoking the original athmospheres of the Theatre.

Pass through the heavy door with some verses from one of the greatest Portuguese Poets – Almeida Garrettand – to step in a real theatre, where the box office has became a reception, and your room pass will be a ticket. In the corners, clothes racks with character costumes, stage ropes and floodlights. At a first glance, the interior looks luxurious yet vintage.

Bronze tones and simply textures embody all the interiors, giving continuity and a special warm look.

The space becomes even more luxurious in the back restaurant, that has been designed like a golden dream to become true, and expands in the inner patio. In the bar you will feel back in the Sixties instead, with an original curved sofa and recycled glass furniture.

And the beautiful carpet you will see, it’s decorated with authentic photographs…while those ones at the entry have been changed with the main protagonists of the hotel, as the ones of the hotel owners!

Oggi saltiamo indietro nel tempo -nostalgia ahimé- , non solo a quest’estate e al mio viaggio in Portogallo, ma indietro di 150 anni. A voi è mai capitato di dormire in un vecchio teatro Portoghese?

Per incominciare, va detto che la storia di questo posto incredibile di nome Hotel Teatro inizia appunto nel 1859, in un teatro nel centro storico di Porto chiamato Baquet Theatre, inaugurato proprio in quell’anno. E si salta a 151 anni dopo nel medesimo teatro, trasformato in un hotel di design – parte della DesignHotels collection – dal gusto bohemien che evoca le atmosfere originarie dell’antico teatro.

L’unicità di questo posto la si percepisce da subito, con quel peeesantissimo portone d’ingresso inciso a caratteri corsivi – l’ho scoperto poi che si tratta di una poesia di un noto scrittore portoghese, Almeida Garretand. Entri e ti ritrovi in una vera e propria biglietteria, dove vai a chiedere le chiavi della tua stanza e ti viene consegnato il biglietto. Butti l’occhio verso gli angoli, e intravedi stendini con costumi di scena, corde, fari vintage.

Questo posto è un tripudio di tonalità bronzee ed oro, che rendono lo spazio ed i piani estremamente unitari.

Una volta oltrepassato l’ingresso, ti ritroverai certamente a guardare oltre con curiosità, verso la sala ristorante collocata sul retro e decorata in oro e nicchie, così preziosa da domandarti se sia vera o no. La sala continua in un bel patio interno e si trasforma poi nel bar dell’hotel, dove invece farai un salto indietro negli anni Sessanta, con quel grande divano in velluto dalle linee curve…

The architect – Nini Andrade Silva – developed al the concept with the idea of preserving the theatre history and respecting its elegant mood. Lighting design is the key element: indeed, like on a stage, lighting sources have been reduced to their minimum visibility, integrated in the interior decor and in the golden space.

Finally, let’s go up in one of the 74 rooms: passing through an hallway covered with large curtains on sides, let’s discover the bedroom now. Must be an amazing one in a place like this!

Indeed, our room was a mix of functionality and luxury: a wide bed combined with a custom furniture piece serving as headboard, as desk and as bedside tables, all in the warm tones of gold and bronze (remember I told you about gold as a trend for 2016 here just a few days ago?).

Even the bathroom washbasin was in gold, oh yeah!

Non c’è dubbio, qui l’architetto – Nini Andrade Silva – ha fatto ruotare tutto il suo progetto intorno alla volontà di preservare la storia e il mood originario dell’hotel. A volte un po’ buio, ma anche questo appunto fa parte del mood, e il progetto illuminotecnico – con luci spesso nascoste, un po’ come le luci di scena- ne è parte integrante.

E allora, andiamo in camera? Prima, dovrai attraversare lunghi corridoi rivestiti su entrambi i lati da tendaggi, sempre nelle tonalità del bronzo. Se hai fortuna di trovare la porta…eccoti la camera!

La nostra camera era un mix di lusso e comodità: un ampio letto incorniciato da un mobile su misura che abbracciava il letto stesso e comprendeva scrivania, comodini, luci. Il tutto sempre nei toni caldi dell’oro e del bronzo (a proposito di oro, ricordate questo post?).

Persino il lavandino del bagno era tempestato d’oro.

Ora capirete il perché di tanta nostalgia…non sono mica abituata a tutto questo lusso io, eh.
