There are some pieces of furniture that will never go out of style. A bit like those apparel that will last a lifetime in your wardrobe.
The Chesterfield sofa is one of these. A furniture element that can solve even the most difficult corners of a project, adding a touch of style of a whole interior.
I’m really a passione of this seat: we have added it for example in our project of a restaurant in Perth here and thanks to it, the space turned into a beautiful relax corner for the entire room. I’m a little bit partial on this as I have a weakness for all British culture (by the way, I wrote an article about this on Houzz here), maybe because I lived in London for a while and still there’s a little bit of it in my heart.

Ci sono pezzi di arredo che non passeranno mai di moda. Un po’ come certi capi di vestiario che ti durano una vita.
Il divano Chesterfield è uno di questi. L’elemento che ti risolve anche quegli angoli di arredo più difficili aggiungendo un tocco di stile che ti svolta il look di una stanza.
Io ho proprio una passione per questa seduta: l’abbiamo proposta ad esempio nel nostro progetto di ristorante a Perth qui e proprio grazie a lui ne è nato un bell’angolo relax per tutto il locale, ma sono tanti gli esempi da cui trarre spunto. Sono un po’ parziale in questo lo devo ammettere perché io ho proprio un debole verso la cultura inglese (a proposito, ci ho scritto un articolo in Houzz qui), forse perché ho vissuto per un po’ a Londra e me ne è rimasto un pezzetto nel cuore ecco.

Chesterfield sofa is an icon of British style. And the history of this seat is really fascinating, even without any solid confirmation (but I want to believe it was like this!)
It is believed that the first of these sofas was commissioned in the Eighteenth century by Lord Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, a much-admired politician and writer, but also known as a trendsetter. So stylish to ask a local craftsman to construct a piece of furniture that would allow a gentleman to sit upright in the utmost of comfort allowing sitting without wrinkling the garment. From a postural need, then, that distinctive feature of an equal back and arm height.
Another distinctive feature, deep buttoned upholstery: known as English quilting, it has a typical rhombus motif with buttons applied on the padded covering, a traditional technique used to reinforce the padding.

E il divano Chesterfield è proprio l’emblema dello stile British: e la storia di questa seduta, per quanto non confermata ufficialmente, è davvero affascinante.
Pare infatti che il primo di questi divani fu commissionato proprio nel Settecento da un Lord inglese, tale Lord Phillip Stanhope conte di Chesterfield , noto come uomo politico e scrittore ma anche come trendsetter dell’epoca. Talmente stiloso quest’uomo che chiese a un artigiano del posto di costruire una seduta che permettesse ai lord di sedersi diritti senza stropicciarsi l’abito. Da un’esigenza posturale nasce quindi la classica caratteristica del divano Chesterfield di avere braccioli e sedute alla stessa altezza.
Altro tratto distintivo, la trapuntatura a capitonné: conosciuta come trapuntatura inglese, ha un tipico motivo romboidale con bottoni applicati sul rivestimento imbottito, tecnica tradizionalmente usata per rinforzare il materiale da imbottitura.

Quello che più mi piace è vedere come un pezzo di arredo estremamente classico come il divano Chesterfield sia in realtà perfetto in ambienti che di stile classico non hanno nulla. Penso ad esempio ad interni in stile industriale o nordico, guardate nelle immagini qui sotto: che ne pensate?

Thanks to Sofa by Saxon, a British manufacturer and seller of Chesterfield sofas (and more), I’m adding here some useful info for those of you who are thinking of purchasing a Chesterfield. Thinking for example of the dimensions and of the possible finishes and colours you can consider.

Grazie a Sofa by Saxon, un’azienda inglese produttrice artigianalmente di divani Chesterfield (e anche altri a dire il vero, anche se questo è il loro prodotto di punta), vi aggiungo qui sotto qualche informazione pratica nel caso stiate considerando un Chesterfield per casa vostra.
