To me, the beginning of the year always brings in a new spirit and the desire to start afresh. Personal good resolutions and purposes aside, I am always happy to embark in something new related to the house. I love playing with colors in particular – either by repainting all or part of the walls, changing the décor and upholstery or introducing new colorful accent elements – because it is a fun and relatively cheap way to renovate, reinterpret or transform a space.

Start considering and mapping out all the elements of your room(s) that can’t be easily replaced, such as pieces of furniture, artworks, fabrics or tiles, as the main landmark in your colors’ hunting. Do they match well with the colors scheme you have in mind?

Follow your taste and be inspired / How to choose the right color for your home

Also, let your personal taste guide you of course: think about the colors you like the most, those that make you happy and comfortable (follow the holistic interior design approach!) and make them dominant around you. Try also to find your inspiration around you: the lovely boutique hotel you have visited last month, decor magazines, blogs and Pinterest (I love Pinterest!).

Once you have identified your colors, to fully understand how they match together as well as their final visual effect, always consider their undertones, the hues that lie beneath that will affect the most the success of your project. One way to determine the undertone of a chosen color is to place it alongside its true color on the color wheel and check the subtle tones that magically will become immediately evident.

Finally, always take in mind that different light will alter a color’s appearance, so test your chosen color by placing a sample of it in your home and watching how they reflect light through the day and into the evening (colors will also be affected as the light changes through the seasons).
