INTERIOR TRENDS | Do you know the meaning of Kawaii?

Discover more about the Kawaii trend in interiors and design

Do you know what the word kawaii means ?

Kawaii (from Japanese: ‘loveable’ ‘cute’, or ‘adorable’)  is the culture of cuteness in Japan.

The kawaii aesthetic, during the years has become a prominent aspect of Japanese popular culture and lifestyle – lately, it has made a leap into the world and is spreading everywhere. Examples include cute handwriting, certain genres of manga, and characters including Hello Kitty – that you can find everywhere in Japan. The words “cute” and “neat” have taken precedence over the former Japanese aesthetics of “beautiful” and “refined”, a real cultural phenomenon increasingly accepted in Japan as a part of Japanese culture and national identity.

The rising popularity of this trend and its spreading outside Japan, finds a reason in bigger trends that are related to our behavior and psychology – strictly linked to the feelings of escapism and the massive need of more kindness.

#1 THE PALETTE Kawaii Trend

The signature of this style is a soft palette in pastel and feminine colors. Combine different chalky pastels, such as pale pinks, peach, lilac, lemon yellow, baby blue, mint green, with warm whites. Black and metals are perfect if used in small accents. We already wrote a lot about the comeback of pastels in design – do you remember this article, pastels are the new neutrals?

#2 INTERIOR TIPS / Kawaii Trend

In interiors the kawaii aesthetics is translated with soft shapes, geometrical but with rounded corners, and a tactile look with grooves and 3d patterns. Geometrical but soft patterns are matched with more organic patterns, like the terrazzo one. The whole atmosphere is cosy and simple, minimalist but at the same time not bare nor cold.
